Hello,
I am getting runtime errors at startup on a vista ultimate 64 bit sp2 OS.
I would like to find the error in Event Viewer. I tried find "runtime" on the
Appplication , Security and System logs with no results.
Of the many logs, where should I look for runtime error 217 at 500A258A?
Thanks

Runtime error 217 at 500A258A

I ran sfc /scannow from a command prompt. Errors were found in eight files and three components.
It remains to be seen if that corrects my runtime error.

No Joy.
I got the same runtime error at the same location.
If anyone can show me how to find it in an Event Viewer log it might help

Hi Frank-

Are you using Norton anti-virus? If so, which version.

Also, are you using IE as your browser?

At which point in the startup do you get this error?

I do not use Norton anti-virus.
I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Spybot Search and Destroy.
I use Firefox as my primary browser. I use I.E. only when FF fails on a web site.
The runtime error is sporadic. The computer has to be fully booted before it occurs. Some times it does not occur at all. Once I had it three times in succession. It does not seem to cause a problem but I would like to correct it.
I thought if I could find it in a Event Viewer log it might help isolate the conflict.

At this site (August 12, 2009):
runtime errors 217 - Microsoft Community
I found this:
Click Start, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click View problem history under the Problem Reports and Solutions category.

My vista does not have System and Maintenance in the Control Panel

I found Problem Reports and Solutions in the Control Panel. It was not under System and Maintenance. It was a separate entry.
Looking at reported problems around the time that I did this mornings boot, I see this error:
hpqddsvc.jpg
I don't know if it is related to the runtime error 217 at 500A258A which did occur around that time (6:40 AM).

Run msconfig.exe. In the Services tab, disable HP Cue..................... and Apply. Reboot.

Since the error is erratic, I don't know how long it will take to figure out if that's the problem.

Hi,
I tried disabling HP CUE Device Discovery Service. On reboot I did not see the runtime error. However,

I got in trouble with my HP Photosmart D7260 Printer. It was no longer accessible to the Desktop

computer. I set HP CUE Device Discovery Service back to automatic and re-booted. The printer was still

missing. So, I went to a restore point. All is well now but I'll probably still get the runtime error.
I'll pursue the hpqddsvc Service Hang error with HP.

I didn't think it would affect the ability to use your printer but wasn't sure. Take a look at this to see what that service does and some of the fixes-

HP CUE Device Discovery Service - HP Support Forum - 31377

Even doing any of those fixes, your getting a different type of error and it could be possible that you will have to reinstall your printer.

Let me know how it goes.

If the error persists, I am going to try delayed start:

A common pitfall of many Windows users is to assume that just shutting off services is the proper path. I had this same problem on a Vista Ultimate x64 machine and noticed my boot/taskbar getting clobbered on each and every boot - resulting in very slow system desktop load/complete times. Unless you've been directed by the manufacturer to just disable a service integral to an application, always try and do a 'service' delay start first - in the admin SERVICES tab. In this way, the service is enabled as per default but delayed a bit when booting so as not to interferre with other items that are loading during crunch time.

Did the error come back?

Let me know what you eventually do to solve it.

There were no runtime error 217 at 500A258A upon Start up this AM.
Also there were no hpqddsvc entries in Problem Reports for the morning of Mar 3.
I will continue to monitor both events and report if anything changes.
If the error re-appears I will try the delayed start for hpqddsvc.

My computer was scheduled to awaken from sleep mode at 12 midnight last night and run a Spybot virus scan. It did so, and there were seven occurences of runtime error. Five 217 at 500A258 and two 216 at 5003A115. There was one hpqddsvc Service Hang in Problem Reports and Solutions on 5/4 at 12:21 PM .
I set hpqddsvc for delayed start and re-booted. Looking at task manager, hpqddsvc went from stopped to running in about four minutes at startup. I will report on any runtime errors encountered in the future.

The runtime error has not recurred since I changed hpqddsvc (HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service)
to delayed start. If it does happen again I have created a Event Viewer Custom View to look at all errors in all logs within an hour time frame of the error. This should help me spot a coincident fault.

I don't see where this would be harmful.

FrankC- glad to hear everything is okay. Hopefully you won't need the custom view for the event viewer.
