Laptop stuck on bootloop

I'll go ahead and mention that this might be on the wrong forum as this machine might have had another OS installed but I could find out that this had Vista from the factory (which version of Vista I couldn't find out) so I guess this is my best bet.
Machine isn't mine, we borrowed it from our uncle for my sister to use, computer illiterate as she is she can't even tell me which OS it was using (likely W8 but I never touched it either and asking my uncle about it wouldn't feel right).
After a couple weeks it stopped working out of the blue, she tells me she was using it one night and it had little battery left and it ended up running out and the machine shut down and she went to sleep, next morning it wouldn't boot.
I imagine the problem is the battery, I used Hiren's BootCD to test it a bit and everything seems fine, I ran a bunch of tests with Mini Windows XP and only thing that seems out of place is the fact that it won't detect a battery when using one of the apps it has that deals with the battery, the laptop does work without being plug in though so I don't know if that's really it.
I tried recovery mode on startup but that doesn't work either, it just goes back to bootlooping.
It's a Compaq.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try running Startup Repair: Startup Repair: frequently asked questions

Do you have a Vista install DVD you can use to attempt repairs? If not, post here and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.

Using that, follow the directions in the link I provided.
