An error has occurred with installed software icons on desktop. A white patch with three symbols cover each icon still displaying a fraction of original sign. I tried the Vista Shortcut Manager, but tis fails to correct error. Can the original icons be restored to show icons prior to error?

If you have a Restore Point from just before the onset of the problem that is likely your best bet.

I reported the broken link. In the meantime you could do it by hand by pasting the commands in a command prompt. It's only three lines. Here's a snippet from that part of the tutorial

To Manually Rebuild the Icon Cache using the Command Prompt

1.
Close and save anything that you are working on. This command will kill explorer and restart the computer when completed.

2. Open the Start Menu, and type cmd in the search box and press enter.

3. In the command prompt, Copy and Paste each command line below and press enter after each command.
WARNING: The last command will restart the computer, so be sure to close and save anything that you are working on first.

  • taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
  • DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A
  • shutdown /r /f /t 00

Hit <Enter> after pasting each line in the command console.

I re-ran the program and it ran ok, except the last entry "shutdown /r /f /t 00", this showed "it is not recognised as an internal or external command". Broken Link appears to have been corrected.

If you right click on an icon and select properties, is the target set correctly? If not, browse to the correct .exe file in the Start In box.

Does that help?

I didn't ask you to change the icon. I wanted you to type in the path to the .exe file for the shortcut in the Start In box. Or, you could delete the shortcut and create a new one.

I tried to delete the selected icon and then changed icon. Again tried by deleting the entire software, re-installing. Icon in question remains hidden and covered over with a white icon/white box with three symbols. Error originated after zoom changed to 30% without any change by myself. Zoom is now changed back to 100%, error still persists.

Typed path "CCleaner.exe", enter. Windows cannot find "CCleaner64.exe", CCleaner actually works properly, though its original icon is not shown in desktop other than as error reported in this thread.

Not sure of what else to advise other than a repair install, but that's a bit drastic and only if all else fails. Hopefully someone else will suggest something.
