iPhone photos download problem

When I plug my 5s iPhone into my PC, the photos show up in folders with random number & letter labels, instead of showing thumbnails. The photos within a given folder are from the same date range, but there is no way to determine which folder holds the most recent photos. The labels don't make sense. This all started on 3/6/2015, I think, because thats the date all the folders were created. What happened?

How are you transferring the photos to the computer? The iPhone doesn't support data sharing via USB.

Do you have iTunes installed on your PC? If so, open it after connecting your phone to the computer and use the Scanner and Camera wizard to transfer the photos to a folder that you specify. Can you see the thumbnails? You might also be able to use something like the free Nero MediaHome to do the same thing.

I'm not an authority on this stuff so my knowledge is limited.
