I've just done a format and re-install of Vista on my parents' PC to try and solve their slow-running problems - it hasn't had a reinstall since 2008.
I used Easy Transfer to create a backup of their personal data on an external USB drive first, but when I try to restore that backup, the ET wizard gets stuck in a loop. It tells me to select the .MIG, which I do, and when I click "Open" I just get the same dialog box telling me to select the .MIG.
I've Googled this, and found quite a few people with the exact same problem, but no actual solution. In most cases they were trying to go from Vista to 7, but I'm simply reinstalling Vista.
The only thing I can think of right now (other than that ET is simply broken) is that the problem is caused by trying to do the restore before Vista had fully updated. The PC was on SP2 when I made the ET backup, but the install disc is SP1, and when I left my parents' house there were 108 updates needing to be installed (none of which were SP2) - after they've all happened, I guess I'll get the option to update to SP2. I'll be going back there tomorrow to finish off.
Does anybody have any insight on this? And worst-case, is there any app I can use to open the .MIG and extract files manually?
