Vista Analyze and Defrag Problems!

If this post is in the wrong section, please move it to the proper one.

Hello all. First post here for me and I’ve got a question about Vista Ultimate x64 that I have not been able to find an answer for in any search I’ve done online or here on this forum. I’ve been messing with this now for a few months but still don’t have a “fix” for it.

The problem I have is two of the many functions that Vista does automatically at boot up, ie, analyze and defrag on hard drives. If Vista was the only drive I have in my system these wouldn’t be a problem but that’s not the case. This is a multi-boot system with 8 bootable hard drives including XP, Vista, 7, 10, Ubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17.2. The two Linux distros are on two different Solid State Drives so that leaves 4 SATA and two IDE bootable drives for the different Windows versions.

So the problem is that every time I boot into Vista my system is slowed down by Vista analyzing EVERY Windows drive in this system?? And please don’t tell me that this can be stopped in the GUI because it CAN’T, been there, done that without success! I was able to completely disable defrag by deleting the 3 files from the Sysytem32 directory that control that part but I’m at a loss as to how to stop Vista from running the analyze part on ALL those drives each time it’s booted?? I defrag Vista when needed using the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 system that’s also installed on this computer.

So can someone tell me what can be done to stop the analyze function from running at boot on Vista before I pull the rest of my hair out trying to figure it out myself?

Thanks

Rich thanks for the reply. I read over that post but that isn't what my problem is. Vista boots fine to a normal desktop but it's just slow because of the hard drive activity which is the analyze function. I found out that analyze was running one day when I went into defrag GUI menu and noticed that it stated that it had 7 more disks to go before I hit any of the buttons there.

I guess it does the analyze function to identify what drives actually need to be defragged. It just takes so long for it to finish that. It's running that right now as I just booted up about 5 minutes ago that Vista OS and the hard drive LED is just blinking away, and it will do that for 10 minutes or so on EVERY boot up.

I've got a couple of old games that I play that are installed on that Vista drive so I don't want to scrap it.

Ennywho, there's got to be a way to stop that analyze junk from running?

You might be able to "hide" the drives by removing the drive letters and mounting them into a empty folder. You do this through disk management.

Can he not turn off the System Maintenance tasks in Task Scheduler? I can't remember if Vista is set up like that.

I believe that defragging can be turned of completely however he may not want to do that. There are alternative defraggers than the native tools. An alternative would be to disable Vista's access to the hard drives in device manager however then he wouldn't be able to access the data.

Defrag itself is already disabled, ie, I REMOVED the three .exe files in the System32 directory that make it run. I do defrag that Vista drive MANUALLY when it needs it using the Windows 7 x64 OS in that computer on another drive.

FYI I tried one of those free defrag programs on it but that didn't help either. Did that before I deleted the .exe files.

What I really need to do is find the .exe that makes it do the analyze function at boot. Either that or edit the config file that starts it to make it stop.

Thanks

The only thing I can think of is to remove the drive letters from partitions that don't need them and mount them in empty folders. I did this when I had 6 OSs on my desktop. I only had 3 hard drives though. Mount or dismount a drive - Windows Help
