Vista will not load

Hello all,
My parents laptop has gone wrong and I am rather stuck on trying to get it up and running again.
When the laptop is switched on, I get a screen saying Windows failed to start. I am given various boot options (safe mode, last known good configuration, start Windows normally etc). Whichever option I choose I then get another message saying to insert the installation disc which they don't have. I bought a recovery disc from eBay but when I run this , I get the following message
'windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I assume I can download a copy of this file from the web but I don't have a clue how to install it because Windows won't start.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as its my parents laptop and they have so much stuff on it and really need to get it back up and running

many thanks

Do you have a Vista install DVD you can use to attempt repairs? If not, post post here:

Vista ISO download

and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.
Create a DVD from the ISO using ImgBurn.

Boot the DVD, click on Repair your computer on the 2nd screen (I think).
From Command Prompt, run chkdsk c: /f.

See if that resolves the problem.

That is a bad message to get due to what that file does. The only solution is to reinstall windows because either Windows is corrupt or the hard drive is corrupt. I recommend that you download the ISO as per ztucker's link and reinstall. As for downloading a copy on the web, NEVER do that. It could be infected or hacked and replacing it might not even solve the problem. If you need to get their data off use a bootable copy of linux such as ubuntu or knoppix.
