Password problem

I have been locked out of my older laptop (running Vista) because I have forgotten the password and I presume it automatically locks you out after a number of attempts. Anyway, I followed some advice about starting in Safe Mode and changing the password that way but I was unable to do so as I still needed to input the password. So is my newer laptop, which is running windows 8.1, of any help here. Is it possible to download something on this laptop onto a usb stick and use that to solve the problem? Thanks.

Thank you for your response and welcome. It looks like I will need to attempt method 3. However, before doing so I noticed you could purchase and download a couple of programs to solve this problem also. It might be the lesser of two evils for me. Do you have any experience of these? I was looking at the Vodusoft product from Appkeen.

I don't use such tools.

I tried this and got as far as selecting 1 from the menu; "User data and Passwords" but then got an error message which said "SAM registry file not loaded". That's as far as I got.

Thanks. I will have a look at that. By the way, I was thinking of upgrading the pc to Windows 8.1. Do you know if the password lockout would prevent me from doing this?

My Computer

It would prevent you from upgrading to W8.1 if you are unable to log in, but you could still clean install if wanted.

Thanks. So let me get this straight. Assuming I get nowhere with your suggestion in post no 7, I can do a clean install of Win 8. Where do I get the installation disc from? Is there such a thing as a clean install of Vista? And, assuming I decide against any installation then the pc is basically a brick? So my options are;
1) Successfully follow your advice in post 7 and if that fails then
2) Do a clean install of Win 8 or Vista or
3) Download third party software and try that and if that fails then
4) Take the laptop to the nearest recycling centre
Is that about it?

If you opened a command prompt at boot using recovery or installation media, it shouldn't have asked for a password.

What John posted above, is a good option as well though.

Let's get Started!

1) The Boot Priority in the BIOS needs to be set to boot first from the optical drive; insert your Windows disk and re-start the PC.
At the first screen select your language then Repair your computer then it'll do some searching, at System Recovery Options dot Use recovery tools then select the OS and click next; while there make note of the OS drive letter, it may not be C: like mine is D:.

Did not get that far. It asked for password after system recovery. Or have I missed something?

My Computer

Just to clarify, were you able to boot from your retail installation media?

Managed to get System Recovery Options now but I'm not going to have time to use the command prompt today but will do so tomorrow.
I notice there is also the option of System Restore. Why will that not work? Thanks.

System Restore will also change your password to what it was when the restore point was created.

Thanks. Just ran System Restore from the install disc. Restored to a point well in the past and it ran successfully. Unfortunately, the old password (which I know) would not work. Oh well, I guess it's command prompt tomorrow!!

My Computer

Just had a go at this and managed to get past step 11 where you take out the disc and restart the pc. Then, instead of the command window opening on restart, the pc went into Startup Repair. And then "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically". However there was an option in System Recovery Options to access the command prompt but there was a password required! Not that it matters as the account has been disabled.
