Vista 64 won't shut down right

My Vista 64 used to shut down nicely, but recently it just freezes at the shutting down page. I have to manually hold in my power button for 5 seconds.

The shutting down screen used to half fade out and freeze, but now just freezes at full brightness.

I feel this is a software issue as when I restart the system, it shuts down and all fans power off, and then the system restarts no problem.

Anyone else have this problem?

Well i had read this somewhere :
Vista keeps logs of the startup and shutdown process but it's sometimes hard to interpet them.
In the event viewer open Aplications and Services - Microsoft - Windows - Diagnostics-Performance - Operational.
Event ID's 200 - 299 are related to shutdown.
Event ID 200 is the actual time it took to shutdown. Others in the 200 range are problems encountered during shutdown.

Alternatively, try Logging off and then Shutting down .
Also install all the latest Windows Updates and see if it solves the issue.

You didn't recently install something that you can remember did you? Try uninstalling the latest thing you installed prior to the problem.
The fact that it "used to" shut down properly indicates that you are probably right about it being a software problem.

I noticed that after attaching an external hard drive (firewire), it added about 90 seconds to my shutdown and sometimes it wouldn't start either. I've since disconnected it, back to <5 sec shutdown.
