Task manager/Processes

Vista 64, 2gb ram, Geforce 8600, 250 gb sata hd, intel 6420 core2duo cpu, asus P5L vm mobo.

Anyone suggest a tool that will let me see what exactly is running in the background. In the task manager/processes there a "Host Process for Windows" going on thats using approx 107,212K of memory. Image name is Svchost.exe, would this be the Superfetch at work here ?

Also I seem to have 68 processes (which I think could be reduced)going on in total, cpu usage when idle is at 1% and physical memory at 58 %.
Are these figures near normal for the above specs ?
The computer does'nt seem any slower.

Re: Task manager/Processes

Hi Lazarus,

While your in Task Manager, right click on the process and click Go to Service(s). This will take you inside of the Services tab where the responsible items are highlighted for your Svchost.exe process. This will tell you what they are.

Re: Task manager/Processes

Maybe I'm just being a bit thick this morning, when I look in the processes tab I see the various things that are running for example I have a few svchosts.exe running described as I said earlier.

When I go into the services tab I realise these are programs running and they show the process ID (PID)etc but in the processes tab it doesn,t really explain what one particular svchost.exe is doing and why one svchost may only be using a little memory and anonther svchost entry may use a lot of memory. I'm only trying to identify which program running in the background is using lots of memory in the svchost entries.
Hope that makes a little sense to you, I'm just outta bed

Re: Task manager/Processes

Ok Lazarus,

I'm sorry, but having it show you what specific services are running for that particular svchosts.exe process is the only way I know of with what Vista gives you. I suppose some 3rd party program could break it down completely for you, but I do not know of any. Hopefully someone else may know of a good one for you.

Sorry,
Shawn
