HDMI to DVI or New Graphics Card

Hi,

I have just purchased an Acer M3100 computer (http://www.acer.com.au/acer/akc/homepc.nsf/Page/RWP5400E0DD295037A2CA25731700203CAB?open&current=17.3) running Vista Home Prem x64.

The computer came with on board graphics with VGA and HDMI outputs. The system came with an Acer 24" LCD monitor with VGA & DVI inputs.

I'm not quite happy with the VGA to VGA graphics on the screen.

To improve the graphics I was thinking of two possible options.

1. Buy a HDMI to DVI cable

2. Buy a graphics card that has DVI output and disable the on board graphics

Does anyone have any suggestions as the best option to improve the graphics?

Cheers, Liam.

Either HDMI or DVI cables would be a huge visual upgrade for you! You will really be able to tell a difference.

Make sure you get good, thick, shielded cables though to minimize interference.

My Computer

You can get a HDMI to DVI cable at http://www.monoprice.com, they have great quality cables at excellent prices and cheap shipping, I buy all my cables here.

Don't buy Monster cables or other such hyped cables, WAY over priced and no better.

I have DVI out on my 8800GT to my LCD that has HDMI input, looks much better than VGA

My Computer

I still do not grasp the concept of hdmi output on a graphics card. Will the onboard sound or soundcard output throught the video card's hdmi cable? Whats the benifit?

It's actually a fantastic idea. No, you obviously aren't going to get a sound feed through your VGA unless it has a pin connector to your soundcard, and no, it's not really higher quality, but for people like me who game through their HMDI TV, its great to see that people are supporting that.

Plus, I have an HDMI monitor by gateway, and I believe the industry is going to be moving over soon so why not?

on this note i have a question.
i have a 8600GT (512MB) it has both dvi and avi support and i have a viewsonic 22" LCD that supports HD now can i get a what cable should i ge so that i can get HD on my monitor??

My Computer

You do get an increase in your monitor picture using hdmi or dvi cable because of the way the picture is sent down the cable. As regards to a gfx card, get an 8800. They come in many flavours and are quite tasty.
