Dual Screen Problems

Hello All,

I hope someone can help me with this - I used to be pretty good with XP, but now that i've upgraded to Vista, im lost in areas.

Anyways, I had a dual-monitor setup on my machine with XP, but Vista won't allow the same setup.

I am running an nVidia GeForce 7900 GT/GTO with "Automatic Update" for the drivers (i.e. I don't know if they are the newest or not, but they are the ones provided by Microsoft for auto download)

My primary monitor (Acer 20" Widescreen) works fine when plugged in. however, when i plug in my Vison monitor (with a VGA to DVI adapter), and go through the routine of "attaching" the monitor, then setting the resolution, something i've never seen before happens. When I click "ok", the screen goes black for 2 seconds, then re-emerges completey messed up. My primary screen is either in a shade of green or blue, a mix of horizontal "snow", horizontal lines, and a single shade of previously mentioned colors. My Vison (secondary monitor) suddenly jumps up to (at minimum), 800x600 res. The taskbar, icons, menus, and windows all disappear from view (and of course, I can't see anything on my primary except colored snow). I am forced to restart (since I can't see any window to change the resolution). On restart, if I have unplugged my Vison, everything starts normally. If I haven't, it starts with the snow/small resolution combo.

I have tried adjustment in both nVidia's Dual Monitor tool, and the Vista-supplied one. The Acer monitor is recognized in Vistas' Display Settings, but the Vison isn't, when plugged in and "attached".

Also, when I come back to my comp, and my monitor has been automatically shut off, I wiggle my mouse, bringing it to life, and it is filled with that colored snow. Forced restart is the only solution.

Is my graphics card just incapable, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry for the loads of text.

Re: Dual Screen Problems

I always prefer to get drivers direct from manufacturer. So download them from the nvidia.

Re: Dual Screen Problems

Did so already. Nothing changed for the dual screen problem, unfortunatley.

Do you think I should contact the manufacturer? this almost seems like a flaw on the card, since i've never seen this cropping up before with anyone else.
