Hey Shawn,

Yeah, that's the only thing I saw on it too, lol. I looked at the bios manual for amd athlon x2 and there's no mention. Now i've seen references to GPU bank flip online but there's no real explanation of that either. In my BIOS I have CPU Bank Flip=Disabled. I couldn't even see a explanation to either in D.B.O.G. Oh well.

I'm sorry, it is GPU, not CPU :o my eyes :geek: lol. I still can't find any explanation on that.

Another thing, in the PC Wizard (system info) program, it says Chipkill ECC/ECC capable but it says disabled. I don't see anywhere in the BIOS for this option?

I'm not sure what GPU bank flip is either. I'm sure it has something to do with the graphics card though.

It appears that Chipkill ECC is a internal part/feature of the CPU.

Many BIOS features don't have a good explanation. I talked with Supermicro about it. They could not determine what some of the features do. They only recommended leaving them default. Don't touch it.

Hi Aaron,

I have searched on Google and Yahoo! for the term "GPU Bank Flip", and have come up with nothing, apart from a few questions on other forums asking the same thing. The only thing that I can think about is that it has something to do with the data processing on the graphics card and that only certain cards support this, hence the reason why it is set as Disabled in the BIOS (where present). I am only surmising that it is a method of allowing the GPU to process a frame of data whilst displaying another and that it is only available on systems that can accept multiple graphics cards, either in Crossfire or SLI (based on my system only having a single graphics card slot and it not being mentioned in my BIOS). Of course, I realise that I might be completely wrong, but it would be interesting to find out if this is indeed the case. Of course, it could be a feature that was programmed into some BIOSes, but not actually implemented in actual systems, a bit like the Floppy which can still appear in the BIOS even though the motherboard of which the BIOS is a part doesn't even have a floppy controller on board.

I have never heard of this. It may be something that is set for future upgrade if seen on a motherboard bios. Same as reserved. If anyone gets any info or if I get any info post here. I belive we are all confused.

Yeah, that's exactly the point. I looked everywhere and only find vague references to it and no explanation as to what it does. It's in my bios, it's in some other peoples bios but no info anywhere on it. You'd think someone would know something about it. It's not a big deal, just very curious.

GPU Bank Flip; Also known as Graphics Processing Unit, is designed for Crossfire Technology from ATI, certain Circuit Boards which support this is set as Disabled as default for user select for crossfire in later cards, which allow the two ati cards to switch from one unit to the next to use and combine both 1 gb or 512 mb of ram on the cards itself. doing so will allow greater speeds as well as software performance. though this is only used when using a game that needs more Random Access Memory. this setting is only required if you have the proper RAM and Crossfire technology, though on certain motherboards which only have one PCIE still remain with that option in the bios which is only intended for at least 2 gigs of ram with one gig of RAM on the Graphics card processing Unit, Single, which in return maximizes the Use of RAM from the OS to the Card. though this varies from which Operating System you use.

Hmm, if you have any more questions feel free to ask budd, but for your other question its my job to know as much as possible to help as many peeps as i can, but the GPU Bank Flip is totally safe to enable assuming you have at the minimum requiremtns to use this feature:

At least one PCIE slot with a ATI Crossfire ready card like ati radeon HD 3850 would do nicely.

At least 512 MB on the ATI Card.

At least 2 Gigs Of RAM On Vista Or 1.512 On XP SP3.

===============================================================

But again if you meet the Minimum here it is totally safe to use this feature, Try enabling this before playing crysis it may boost things here and there alittle quicker. thanks and anymore questions please dont feel hesistant to ask budd.

Well yes, but my question was since I or anyone else that I know of could not find any information on it anywhere. I wanted to know where you got the info about GPU bank flip, is there somewhere that explains what it does or you just know from using it.

Am i not appreciated, i am sorry for not being more helpful, but when you are a computer mechanic, you must know these things working with Customers here and there, its an aptitude for me and thanks for the insights of this information not being anywhere, because now you are the first to have this information and please use it.

My Computer

Yes, thank you. Do not take offense. This is not what I meant. If you know that's what it does then that's what it does. I just don't understand why it's not documented anywhere. I appreciate your insight.
