I have integrated graphics. It's the "choke point" in my system. I am not clear on graphics card upgrades. This is a simple question for most of you guys. Can I go out and buy a new PCI express card and disable my integrated graphics and use this slot for a new graphics card? I am confused....sorry for the newbie question.

P.S. what does GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 mean? Is it the motherboard and integrated graphics? It is listed as "chipset" in the system specs. I thought "chipset" was the motherboard.

Hello again.... (less than 5 mins later...)

Ok so now that your other post has been cleared up, let me get this one for ya.

Yes integrated graphics suck. Go buy a good video card, and put it into the PCIe16 slot, and plug in your monitor. You should be good to go (though read the installation instructions that come with the card) You do not need to disable your integrated graphics, so don't worry about that. Don't worry about asking dumb questions, everyone has them. (That includes all of us "skilled" or whatever rating....)

The GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 describes your integrated graphics. That is equal to a NVidia GeForce 6 series card, which they no longer sell off their website I dont think.

Hope I answered your question.

Okay, thank you. I do not need to worry about disabling the integrated graphics? I have heard it both ways. I have read they will conflict? No? I will be giving it a try next weekend. Are most cards around $100 going to be far better than what I have now?

Thank you very much for the options. I have heard that it's a good idea to go with Nvidia if that's what you have already. I have read that you should go with the same manufacturer if possible. I will look at those two and any more anyone wants to recommend. Thanks again guys.

I never thought of this but I could run into issues with a 300W PS.

And sooner than you think... do your homework before you spend your money.

That's not true unless you want to do a sli or crossfire setup. I have a similar motherboard with the onboard geforce 6100 and I have a Radeon 4850 installed on my system and it runs perfectly fine.

Whats your budget?

For $100 you can get a great card. No don't worry about the integrated graphics, I have done that many times with no issues.

A 300W PSU may not be enough. Consider getting a new one if you plan to do any more upgrades.

um i do love my HD3650..... but for the sake of easiness..... it would be better for him if he went with nvidia..... (although i would never buy anything but ATI :) )

Thanks for all the suggestions. It will really help me as I have to do mine and a major overhaul on 2 family members computers. They're running XP though so I'll have to ask somewhere else I guess. This will really help me. I think I will go see what the local shops have then probably order a card off newegg since I already have an account there. This has been great help. I will do some homework on that PS I may need to upgrade.

That's what I had to expect with a $370 system. I think I did pretty good, but there are a few issues. Next time I will build my own for sure. I am going to start getting components now like a case and power supply and when I get ready to build...I'll already have some of what I need. I hate to put $200 into a $350 system. I am thinking I may just get a few components and wait till the end to get a CPU and motherboard and when Windows 7 is available and stable....finish it. But that's just a good plan. I know it will not work that way. haha

I really think it would be a good idea to get a BIG case and just upgrade a component every few months. A lot of people probably do just that. I am going to move in this direction. I need the experience and you could keep a pretty good system if you just got top of the line main board. Is that where you would want to really fork over the cash? That way you could move to DDR3 and the new sockets, ESATA..... or should you just rebuild your entire system every 2-3 years?

If you're planning on upgrading bit by bit, and want to go to DDR3 in the future, you'll need to be careful with how you do it as most motherboards only support DDR2 or 3, but there are a few that can use both.

LGA 1366 only supports DDR3 unforunatley, but Intels next processors that are due soon, LGA 1160 or something like that, I think supports DDR 2 and 3. Not 100% sure, though.
