It's a matter of opinion. You're always going to have someone say this one is better than the other. There are pros and cons for each Nvidia and ATI card. In other words, neither is.

The new Nvidia gtx 295 is giving ATI's 4870x2 a run for it's money.

Also, you have to take into account diffrent companies that realease thier own versions of ATi or Nnvidia reference cards. Some are better than others.

As for best in the world? Any of the Top-end cards that are factory overclocked I guess.

And as i said, I would "recommend" ATI. :D

ok.....

4870x2..... great card, if your rig is compatible with it, & the drivers (many are not)...lots of raw power, but needs a lot of power to run, a good solution if playing games which don't support SLI or CFX as this has both the die's on the same card it should utilize them both...;) do not buy this card for any resolution below 1920x1200

GTX295..... now i wanna rave about this card, but i cant at the moment, its either being hindered by the dreaded PCB sandwich stutter, or drivers need more work, b/c these cards are producing CRAP framerates currently :( this card IS powerful but until they work out the bugs go for the GTX285 or 2x GTX260s for better performance (currently)

so sometimes ''buying'' the best wont always ''deliver'' the best.....

I have ASUS GeForce GTX295 and it is an amazing card. I don't have any problems at all. The only thing I had a problem with was with GTAIV and it's a software issue other than that no problems. It stays surprisingly cool during max gaming. I played Crysis last night for about an hour and the peak temp on the card was 68 C and was cooled quickly. Great card. You get what you pay for.

Update: I deleted GamerOSD and SmartDoctor from ASUS and the GTAIV gfx problem is fixed. I have everything maxed and get 30-40 fps. Amazing!

im not saying its a complete washout, i know the card has serious potential, but i've heard more ''independent'' horror stories than good with the 295 thus far

the GX2 was the same at launch, but that still has issues to this day....

Was the same with the 7950GX2 as well, and quad-SLI threw even more performance issues at you with two of them :S

Like everyone's said, it's all down to personal preference at the end of it. On paper, I'd say the GTX295 is the best performer, even if in action there are known issues. Hopefully optimised drivers will come quickly to help it.

I am glad I resisted the urge to grab a 295 the other day.... My wallet thanks me ;) Then again, I may end up grabbing a 4870x2 just to spite it :)

But give the 295 a few revisions and some proper drivers and I think there is going to be some serious e-peening going on  :p

Just as a counterpoint here, ATI make great hardware and they seem to be the preferred gaming cards. But for CAD apps, unfortunately their drivers are not up to par. There are frequent reports of display glitches. So, if you're doing anything related to CAD/CAM, I recommend nVidia cards. Their drivers just work better in CAD. FWIW.... --ch

Nvida and ATI is like comparing apples with flargnarger
Seriously you cant really compare them.

ATI in almost every case puts out a better hardware product.

Nvidia in almost every case puts out better drivers.

They both have the same framerate for the most part, usually ati will edge out nvidia by 2-4 fps, but, ATI driver support is Non-existant.

Its your choice, speed, or 2-4 fps slower and better driver support.
