make sure you have the current driver
from nvidia downloaded to your computer--preferable from nvidia website (i am not keen on nvidia, but i would think they would have the drivers
for laptops as well on the website).
try going to device manager and uninstalling the standard vga drivers (as those are generic microsoft drivers). after you do, your screen will probably revert to 640x480, but don't worry.
after you've uninstalled the standard vga drivers, if the computer auto detects "new" hardware (the graphics card), stop the auto install of the drivers. go to the downloaded nvidia drivers and install. you'll probably have to reboot and it should be fine afterward.
