i experienced this problem in my computer.
i've been receiveing black windows in few games (Battlestations Pacific, The Sims 3,Grid, Dirt), and then the game crashes to desktop and the message "display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered" is popped in the taskbar.
my system is:
Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Intel Core i7 920
HD4870 1024MB
3*1024mb DDRIII ram

i add a picture of the error:

i've already saw this site and tried almost everything there,
expect of reducing the GPU clocks with ATI-TOOL. the problem can be caused by the GPU clocks? anyway, here are his clocks:
GPU Clock: 800MHZ
Memory Clock: 925MHZ

Thanks for your help,
wish to solve this problem

hi GigaDude
it seems there is a 1001 solutions to this problem but very few if any seem to work, what will work on one system wont work on another, the only thing i can tell you is to check things like temps and memory, rivatuner seems to be helping some people but as i say what works on their system may not work on yours, i think the bottem line is nobody knows what causes this and nobody knows how to fix it 100%, seems strange to me it afflicts both Nvidia and ATI cards, if it was a driver it would only affect one or the other, and its not vista as i had it on xp, if i were you i would play around with clock speeds, both over and under clocking them, also try turning up and down the voltage to the card, start slow and low and see how it goes, you may be lucky and hit it first time lol, i wish you luck with this m8.

hi stoneys-nutz
thank you for your help :)
if you please tell me what software should i use for playing around with clock speeds?

thanks again,
GigaDude

My Computer

Hi GigaDude,

I too had this problem and as stoneys-nutz has suggested, there are plenty of theories and "suggested" solutions on how to solve this problem. Do a Google search on this and you'll come up with hundreds of threads/posts. This error is prevelent with both ATI and Nvidia under Vista.

One of my many posts about this problem here - http://www.vistax64.com/graphic-cards/195706-display-driver-has-stopped-working-saga.html#post901985

For "me", the problem went away when I replaced my "faulty" video card.

Bottom line is there is no one hard fix solution for this error :(

Good luck.

hi again GigaDude
rivatuner seems to be the one that gets the best results, follow the link below and download it, i would read all the readme's that come with it first and remember to go low and slow on the settings, good luck, i hope you are able to sort this out.

Not to throw a wrench in the works, but lowering your GPU clock speeds from default specs isn't really "fixing the problem" if that works, it’s just hiding it.

However if by lowering your clock speeds yields positive results, i.e. no more "Display stopped responding" errors, then I suggest you replace your card as it is incapable of running at it's designed default speeds.

Also, running tweaking tools on problematic hardware/software isn’t really a good idea as you could wind up getting false positives…or creating more problems.

Just my two cents.

thank you sygnus21,
my last solution is to go the store and replace my card.
meanwhile i'll try my best to fix it myself, i listen to your advice and i don't want to lower the clocks. if it's not work with the clocks that came from the factory, so it's a faulty video card.
what i'm going to do, is to clean up the card from dust and maybe increase the fan speed manualy, maybe it's only a problem of high tempature.
i'll update if i will succeed in what i'm going to do.

thanks for all the help :)
hope to find the right solution for me eventually.

My Computer

I've got a little update:
it's probably not a problem of temperature- i cleaned up the computer yesterday and just now i got a crash in Battlestations Pacific.

so, what cause this problem? i have to replace my graphic card?

My Computer

so, what cause this problem?

I assume you've updated your video drivers?

Have you tried temporarily disabling aero, played a game and seen if it still crashes?

I'd explore all software issues first before blaming a faulty card and potentially replacing it needlessly.

it's not only the crash problem... before the crash i experice black windows which "freeze" the game for a moment. i played an hour in Battlestations now, after cleaning the registry with CCleaner and i had "only" 2 black windows.
i'll try to disable aero next time i'll play...

i cleaned up the registry with CCleaner, maybe this may help.

Use GPU-Z to log your cards speeds/temps while you play a game. This will confirm whether your cards temps and fan speed are okay or not.

GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

Do the games crash with an error code?

Check in Event Viewer>Administrative events for the game crashes. Look for the "faulting module". This may point to a particular driver etc.

event.JPG

Are you using any cracked/no-dvd .exe's? Some cracks will cause plenty of CTD.

so, i did what you suggested: (i played crysis and it crashed after 5 minuets)

this the gpu-z log file:

and in the event viewer i get two Errors and one Warning.
(the game doesn't crash with an error code)

the warning is:
Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

one error:
Faulting application crysis64.exe, version 1.1.1.5767, time stamp 0x471f96dc, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e041d1, exception code 0x0000087a, fault offset 0x00000000000176fd, process id 0x1a04, application start time 0x01c9e83f55d522c1.

and the second:
Faulting application crysis64.exe, version 1.1.1.5767, time stamp 0x471f96dc, faulting module atidxx64.dll, version 8.15.10.190, time stamp 0x49beb3b7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000000000000e72b, process id 0x1a04, application start time 0x01c9e83f55d522c1.

so, how's my card temps and fan speed? what to do with this "faulting module"?
i don't use any cracked/no-dvd .exe's.

hope for a solution,
GigaDude :)

My Computer

so, how's my card temps and fan speed?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Your cards temps and fan speed are perfectly fine, so it's not a heat issue :)

what to do with this "faulting module"?
It's the video drivers.

atikmdag and atidxx64.dll are part of the display drivers. So something has gone a little screwy so it's time to start from scratch again. It may also be worthwhile downloading the Cat 9.5 drivers.

First Download driversweeper and install:
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Next go to control panel>uninstall programs and uninstall ATI Catalyst install manager. This should remove CCC and the drivers.

Now, boot into safe mode and run driver sweeper. (Driver Sweeper must be 'run as admin'). Select only ATI components and then 'clean'.

Boot back into Vista normally and then run the catalyst driver installation again. Then restart once more.

Hopefully all has installed cleanly and will put a stop to your BSOD's.

Let me know how you get on or need any more help with it.

during the install of the ATI driver, there was an error "Driver Install: the INF file was not found". but the install still continue... what to do with that? all the steps before i did exactly as you said.

also, i checked crysis (even though i got this error during the installation) and it crashed after 5 minuets and i got the warning.

what are my next steps?

The cat 9.4 drivers sometimes have issues installing the drivers properly. This is easily fixed.

Go to device manager>Display adapters, right-click properties and select "update driver software" under the drivers tab.

Next "browse my computer for driver software" > "let me pick from a list of device drivers" and in the window select "have disk"

Navigate to:

C:\ATI\Support\9-4_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF

and select CH_78303.inf which should then install the driver.

To verify both the correct CCC and driver version are installed, open Catalyst Control Center and check the info in Information Center / Graphics Software

the driver version should be 8.60 and CCC 9.4

ccc9.4.JPG

Now it should be all installed. The BSOD's and errors could possibly have been caused my a mismatch between the Catalyst version and the display driver.

i did what you say and i even installed Catalyst 9.5.
so the driver version is 8.612 and Catalyst version 9.5. (According to ATI Catalyst Control Center...)
but still, crysis is crashing after 5 minuets of playing, even less then 5 minuets.

so, if it's not the drivers, what cause this warning? (and those game crashes)

Thank you :)
