My card temp seems a little off!

my gfx card temps are a little worrying. Playing a company of heroes 40 minute long game with 8 players on a large map, my temps go up to about 80c.

But it always idles around 70c even when ive just turned my pc on. even the gt200 cards get a lower idle reading than this, and mines only an 8800gts 512card.

I dont think its a stuck sensor either, because if i open up my pc, i cant even touch the heatsink because its so hot.

Hello fieseler,
What are you using to monitor the temps ?.
Are all your fans working and clean ?. (both GPU and case). You may have to remove the card to clean it, check it has good airflow through the cooling fins. (heatsink).
What sort of temp has it run at in the past ?.
I had two BFG 8800 ultra's in sli, they ran very hot but i cant remember them going in to the 80C mark, about 75C/76C was about max for them, although they do run very hot these cards.
BFG will say that 80C is ok and that they have had them run at 90C in tests with no issues, i think the cut off is around 130C for 8800's, (WOW thats hot), unless you are getting graphics problems i would clean it out and keep an eye on it. You could play around with the air flow in your case and see if that helps, or put the fan speed up a bit, i dont think it hits 100% untill the temp reaches 90C, riva tuner is a good way to increase fan speed.
Hope this helps put your mind at rest, good luck.

the 8800's were always hot due to a ridiculous fan profile set by nvidia (the fan speed doesnt go over 40% till yuor card reaches 80 degrees) that said 80 is fine ingame , no problems at all

you can set a custom fan profile up with Riva Tuner if you wish and set it to automatically rise along with temp triggered events

for example i have my 8800 fan to run at 40% on startup then go up by 10% for every 10 degree rise in temp , as a result i idle at 50-56 degrees and run at 72 degrees on full load and my fan speed never goes over 60%

If you want to set this up i can tell yuo how (you will need to download riva tuner and you will need to have it running at startup though) But if not its no problem as it is now as i said 80 degrees is ok , as long as this is the actual ingame temp and not the temp your reading after minimising or ending a game , as your card cen drop 15-20 degrees in the time it takes to shut a game down

My ATI card sits at around 48 -50, but the fan speed also kicks up when needed.

im using gpu-z & hardware monitor to view my temps. I think its definatly the fan speed like archie said. 700rpm is not fast enough to keep this cool.

I thought the fan profiles are set in the graphic card bios by the manufacturers. I got two XFX 8800GTS 512s bought both at seperate times. The first one I bought was an XXX edition and the second one was a normal one, so I flashed the second one with the XXX edition's BIOS, which changed the fan profile for the card as well.

Mine have been running a bit warmer recently due to the weather, and doesn't help with my room being the top floor as well as having the sun shine in my room from 3pm onwards. At load, the first graphic card reaches around 65-67C with fan speed at 76% and the 2nd card is at 60C at load with 64% fan speed. And these aren't with custom fan settings, either.

Though with your fan speed that low at that temp, I think it's best if you do what Archie said.

technically Everlong yes they are in the bios as are the clock speeds , but they can be altered using software , either with Nvidias system tools , EVGA precision (which was designed with the help of Unwinder who is the creator of Riva tuner) , or with Riva tuner itself , which i prefer because it can be ued to set up temp triggered events :)

hi all... Im using gigabyte 8800GT(zalman cooling) and the temp of my card on idle state is 47-49'c, while the temp on heavy load state (playing Crysis on very high setting) is 68-70'c max. Im using riva tuner to adjust my gpu fan speed to 80%.

are you querying your card temps..??, if so thats normal for a single slot 8800GT......;)
