Display issues

I have a Dell Insoiron 350 running Vista Home Basic folr about 6 month without display problems. Suddenly the disply seemed to expand so that the icons on the left and t=right are partly hidden. Then in MS Word the word "file" (top left) is hidden. It seemed to expand to hide the edges.

In XP and earlier I could help this by adjusting the screen resolution. But in Vista I amn prevented from changimng the resolution. TGhe message is that resolution is set for the dervice and monotor and cannnot be changed.

How do I get the disply back to norman size so that I can use my applications fully?

Thx
