Display glitch with 64bit home premium

A little background: was using XP 32bit since it's conception and decided to install 64bit vista home premium, since my current architecture can support it. I'm running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ (2.8GHz), 2 GB of RAM, and an nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB Video Memory).

nVidia Driver version: 191.07
DirectX version: 10.0

As you can probably discern from the screenshot below, I have a slight graphical glitch that seems to be causing little errors whenever anything is redrawn on my screen... Needless to say, this problems didn't exist when I was using XP. Can anyone give any suggestions on how I might narrow down what the problem is exactly?

update edit: went into performance tab in the advanced system settings and tried best performance options, no change, glitch persists...

Here's what happened with "best appearance" settings under the advance system settings...

And it only got worse from there. Back to the "best performance" settings, still sifting through other possible ways to fix this... again, if anyone has any ideas toss em up. Thanks.

By all accounts, that is a bad driverset. I'd either try a previous version, or the newer beta version.

Does the corruption occur in Safe Mode as well?

If it does, then it's not drivers and is indicative of another problem.

edit: *sigh* sadly this hasn't resolved the issue...

following smarty's post...... does it happen in ''safe mode''..??

are you monitoring your GPU temps..??

haven't tried safe mode yet, waiting on windows update to finish up a few optionals then i'll try that and post my results. As to the GPU temps, haven't looked into it as I'm not overclocking anything and my chasis is well ventilated & clean.

still.....the thermal contact may be worn out on the card & its giving a bad HSF connection to the core, this happened to the 8800GT i had, it had to be RMAed... the paste just perishes after a while.

its certainly worth keeping an eye on the temps even if your not OCing. ;)

Is there any graphical corruption during the BIOS loading screen?

Have you 'patched' any files for custom themes or anything like that?

no, no graphical corruption outside of windows, and none in safe mode. i haven't patched any files or anything for any purpose. The only things i have installed is my fresh install of windows vista 64bit home premium, JMC (java mud client), google chrome and driver/windows updates.

All indications certainly seem to point to software error, rather than hardware.

After installing the drivers, did the WEI index need to be updated? (long shot)

Was the glitch right there from the start - prior to installing those apps and updates?

The fact that it's fine in Safe Mode which uses the default VGA driver still tends to suggest the video drivers. Have you tried disabling the Stereoscopic 3D option in the nvidia control panel? (another long shot)

Otherwise it may be worth uninstalling the beta driver, running driver sweeper in safe mode to clean any remnants and then installing one of the stable 186.xx series drivers.

Windows Experience Index... Haven't refreshed it...

The glitch was present at the first startup after installing windows. I don't believe it was present during the install, but I may be wrong as I was mostly away from the computer during that LENGTHY process.

I haven't enabled stereoscopic.

Currently downloading the 186.18 nVidia drivers, and just got driver sweeper from guru3d, so I'll give this set of drivers a shot too...

Just tried uninstalling the newer nVidia drivers, but windows won't let me install 186.18 nVidia drivers stating that it they weren't compatible with my hardware. And everytime I reboot my system after uninstalling and using driver clean windows automagically installs the newer drivers again. I'm so out of ideas...

Edit: Windows sticks me with Version 8.16.11.9062 (190.62) drivers.

This is one process I've used to remove troublesome drivers. Essentially, it's a 'start from scratch method'

·Go to Control Panel\Classic View\Device manager. In Device manager select Display Adapters :

·In Display Adapters right-click on your device and select uninstall. Tick the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" : (This will stop Windows from automatically re-installing the driver after restart)
ATI permanenlty delete.PNG

·Re-Boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper (to ensure complete removal of items, Run Driver Sweeper as admin. "Right-click Driver Sweeper > properties > Compatibility tab tick 'Run this program as Administrator' " :
Run as Admin.jpg

·In Driver Sweeper select the NVidia- Display only and then Analyse:

·Now select Clean to remove all Nvidia software:

Re-boot normally and install the drivers. Refresh the WEI index.

If the option to 'permanently delete the driver' isn't available, or Windows still persists in installing that particular driver, you will need to manually find and delete it from within the C:\Windows\winsxs\*? folder.

(The winsxs folder is a repository of different/backup driver versions. To find the exact folder, find the driver name through device manager>properties>details and then use search)

Followed your directions perfectly, and I managed to get 186.18 on. I guess I just forgot to check the "delete the driver software for this device" thing when uninstalling. The glitch is still present though, and as annoying as ever...

New development: When I have google chrome running the glitch isn't as abundant (almost non-existant), when i close chrome and refresh the desktop it fills the screen with the glitch....

Edit: when I have google chrome running I don't see the glitch at all...

Update: Windows Experience Index says there has been new hardware added and that I need to refresh my score. When I do this the WinSAT.exe process locks up as it says it is assessing the Aero performance portion of the scoring. The process sits at 50% CPU usage, is using both CPUs, by default is at Normal priority and completely stops I/O Read/Writes.

Got windows experience index to work, but had to update the display drivers to 191.07, I'm now at a whopping 4.5 index (hard drive is the low point, CPU is 5.3, rest are 5.9)

Glitch is reproducible when chrome isn't running and I refresh the desktop without moving the mouse. If the mouse is in motion, the glitch isn't apparent, and if chrome is running I can't seem to reproduce the glitch... I'm truly boggled.
