    Graphics card issue..

Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered.

I get that alot since and it's been a couple of weeks now. Everytime I play a game and the graphics card reaches 70-80 degrees a black screen appears and stays for around 3 seconds and then everything is back to normal. I downloaded riva tuner to make my fan spin faster on my Geforce 9800 Gt. I pretty much need to have the fans running at around 80% to keep my graphics card under 70 degrees. This wouldn't be a problem if it made no noise, but after a few weeks of just hearing that fan, I can't stand it anymore. I opened my case on the side to let in more air and nothing really changes. I used a can of compressed air to remove all the dust and nothing has changed. Is there anything I can do instead of buying a new card? I can provide pictures of the inside of my computer if needed. Help would be greatly appreciated

    Re: Graphics card issue..

opening the side of the case will attract more dust outside by all the fans you have. And yes please provide pictures. Also after looking on google the 9800Gt has some heat issues. And check this out (You are experiencing TDR's

TDR's can be cause by Driver conflicts on your system or bad drivers, or bad software

They can be caused by USB drivers, Network drivers, ACPI drivers, Adobe drivers, etc
I got this from MS support... they have a list of known problems
of which Nvidia driver could be one of the problems

    hardware or software drivers
Corrupt or old DirectX can cause it (update it)
even the software you are running like a game (coded wrong, error in it)...update/patch software.

    update your MotherBoard drivers first

Yes, there can be a problem with the driver... Im not discounting that
but most don't have the problem

so you have to look at your system first

A TDR does not mean that a NVida driver is bad)

Lucky last try use river tuner to reduce clocks to 669Mhz

    Good luck
    (sorry if those dont work)

your fan speed isnt even set to rise from 40% till your card reaches over 80 degrees on the NVidia default fan profile , those temps are hot but nowhere near the maximum , the core wont even throttle back till it reaches 120 degrees C.

In short your core temps are perfectly fine and not the cause of your issue , your onboard memory however could be overheating but i doubt it , have you tried a clean driver install or differant drivers?

try the software route before you start with hardware

and b clean driver innstall i mean uninstall drivers then use an app like driver sweeper in safe mode before rebooting and installing new drivers

    Re: Graphics card issue..

Well one thing I noticed is that my fans don't go higher by themselves anymore when the temperature rises. (this info can help with the problem) I did install newer version of driver for video card only and recently had an update on it but I still get the black screens ( Got one yesterday when my computer reached 72 degrees while playing WoW) How would I update my motherboard driver? and btw in RiveTuner my clock is set to 600 on core clock 1500 shader and 900 memory. Is it possible that my fan in front of the computer isn't working anymore? I put my hand there and it doesn't seem to be strong.. Maybe lots of dust is in it but I don't know how to remove it to clean it..

    Re: Graphics card issue..

You should do good cleaning then. As airflow is the best thing for video cards.
Are you getting your drivers from nvidia?

Ditch rivatuner, and get evgaprecision: |MG| EVGA Precision 1.9.6 Download

Whats reaching 72C? your gpu or cpu? BTW nvidia thermals down at 105 and shuts off at 110C

I think your clock speeds are fine, my 8800 gt is at 710/1800/1200

    Re: Graphics card issue..

When my GPU reaches 70 degrees, black screen happens. Also my video card is in the back on the computer in the open. There's little metal plates on top of the video card that is burning hot, I can barely touch it. And yes I got my updated drivers from nvidia website.

    What motherboard do you have?

Have you tested your ram? use Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Its a bootable disk that you run a few hours.

How do I check what motherboard that I have?

And no I didn't do a ram check but I will to make sure that's not the problem.
