Solved Display Settings Changing

My Display Setting have started to change themselves on their own. My standard Resolution is 1920x1200 and my colors is 32 bit. At start-up my screen looks like a photo negative. The Resolution changes to a lower resolution or the Colors change to 16 bit, or both. This just started a few days ago. No new system changes/additions or use of Safe Mode recently. Sometimes the screen resolution will look weird and grainy as it is starting up but once start up is complete everything goes back to normal, sometimes it stays messed up. I've run a virus scan, got the most recent Windows Updates. My NVIDIA video card driver is a GeForce 8400M GS with version 8.15.11.8621. I've tried updating that and Windows says it's already up to date (even though Windows online will list the most up-to-date video driver as 8.17....I try to update it to the 8.17 and it just says I'm up to date. Any assistance would be appreciated.

You go to search, by the start button
you type device manager
in manager you look for the monitor card
the graphics card, too
Then you look for any yellow warning markers.
Then you check the date. If old you update
I will look for our tutorial on the subjectl
Use this to get the information.

but
do this to update
How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html

right-clicked on monitor in Device Monitor (Generic Pnp) and chose Update Driver Software online (search automatically online...). Got: "The best software for your device is already installed"

Did the same for Display Adaptors (which I assume is the graphics card) and got the same response.

I'll review the tutorial. thx

Before you try. Look at the issue date
Then go to device manger is it the same driver or older?
If older update
If not nvida update.
Nvidia has a link that they check for drivers. You may want to use that rather than guess.

went to nvidia.com, couldn't find the search link that will have them tell me which driver to use, but based on my Device Manager I know I have the GeForce 8400M GS and using the Download Drivers link, Option 1, I was able to find this exact driver. The release date online is 2010.10.25, my Driver Version from Device Mngr is 16/06/2009.

doesn't seem like the search is working, it runs the applet, then just sits there at "scanning system..." for 5-10 min now...I'm guessing I should just do the manual upload

The manual upload is fine. Be sure of how it is done.
Follow the instructions carefully. Be sure it is the correct driver.
