Sharp drops in fps

I run an integrated graphic card at the moment because the one i bought was defected and is in the process of being exchanged and mailed back to me. The only games i run on the current card (NVIDIA 6150 LE) is counter strike and quake live, and the card is more than capable of handling both games at low settings with max FPS. Problem started about a week ago: after a couple hours or so of my computer being turned on i try to load either cs or quake and it's horrendously laggy. i mean like 4-5 fps :s as opposed to my usual 100 or 60 with vsync. To fix it i HAVE to restart my computer using the off/on button which i'm sure is not good for the pc either. If i restart the normal way problem remains. Drivers are up to date.

sounds to me like you've got a problem with the driver controller for some reason, mine does the same thing on some games, but i've checked my processes and the FPS drops stop when i end ntunecmd.exe and ntuneservice.exe, but it all depends if you have the said processes installed for it to work for you.

i know you've probably considered this but have you tried a disk defragmentation?

don't use the windows built in one as you'll be there for days waiting for it to finish, download this one and just analyse it first > http://download.cnet.com/Auslogics-...67503.html?part=dl-6267754&subj=dl&tag=buttonhttp://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/

Go to start and type "device manager" without the quotes and hit Enter. Expand all the lists by clicking on the [+] icons, and see if anything has a little yellow triangle with a ! inside it, next to any of your devices. Look for that symbol especially by any of your video cards, or monitor displays, because if there is then that means there's a driver issue (which is usually pretty simple to fix).

That's about all I know haha. Maybe you could try several other games (some graphic-intense, others not) and see what happens. The results could help better figure out exactly what the problem is based on when it happen (two games isn't much to go off; still leaves a lot of possibilities).

ahh unfortunately my graphics card cant handle many games.. but when it happens it's with every single game i can run on this card : tf2, day of defeat, counter strike, quake, half life, i thought maybe something with the source engine but then.. quake live's browser based lol so.. no idea. All i know is when it does happen it's every game. it basically looks like it's frozen, but with fps counter it's 3/4 fps

Hmmm.... Those all seem like pretty graphic intense games. Try something like the games included with your computer. Find the Games folder in All Programs and try them out. Also, see if there's an option in your games like quake, tf2, etc. to play in "windowed" mode. If not, try right-clicking on one of the shortcuts to your game, go to Properties, and type "-windowed" without the quotation marks to the end of the Target box. For instance, if I wanted to run my game Freespace like that, I would change the text inside the Target box from

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace\FS.exe"

to

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace\FS.exe" -windowed

See if any of these ideas has any effect.

You might be oiut of memory. The 6150 is shared with your system, so gaming could eat into it.

Rebooting flushes it out.

Possible... Is it the cause?? no idea.

Im not sure about it using up too much memory.. but the windowed mode seemed to work.. When it fps lagged i put it in windowed it went back to full fps, and then i could fullscreen it again. But when it eventually happened again (had not rebooted) i would have to do the same thing again. For browser based game (quake) there is no real window mode, just in browser or fullscreen and neither worked. However when i went into to counter strike, windowed it, and full screened it all other games worked too including quake.. I don't really want to be window moding and full screening every time it happens as it happens about the 5th time i load up a game. Does the fact that it fixes itself up when it's in windowed help at all?
