connecting acer laptop to an lg led tv via hdmi

the tv just keeps giving a 'no signal' message and for some reason today the laptop also goes blank when i plug in the hdmi.

Something is not quite right! i thought this would be simply to connect.......

You may have the resolution set too high, try lowering it and see what happens. As for the laptop screen going black, there are a few options you can choose when you have multiple displays: laptop only, laptop and tv, tv only etc. To cycle between them try the function key (Fn) and F5 at the same time.
