Solved What too upgarde my video card too?

Hi

I'm new round here but I've seen you are all very helpful, so i hope you can help.

My Video card has gone up in smoke, it's very hard to even post this thread, everything look's like an Andy Worhole picture, so I'm assuming it broke and the computer is using some standard mother board graphic's.

I Obviously need too upgrade but i don't know how far i can go. I was running an Nvidea 8300 GS, as far as i can tell it's a PCI e with a memory of 256 Mb. obvousily i don't want one worse then this. I have heard my power supple might need upgrading for top line graphic's cards. I also think that my Intel core due 2 might stop me from getting the most out of a top line card. The last thing too mention is while i'm not a gamer, it would be nice too play GTA3 or Duke nukem forever, I'm more of an internet browser and have children.

Hope you can help

this might be just what you're looking for, it's a low end card but should be able to run off your Power supply, it uses hardly any power and has enough kick to play the games you want to play :)

Welcome to the forum... My question is what size case do you have?

I'd go for a gt 440. Its low power draw, same as a 520, and nice performance ~ 8800/9800 gt.

Don't want too sound too new but are both them cards not lower then the one I'm using at the mo?

My case is 40 deep X 40 high X 20 Wide CM, approx, just out of interest how is this relevant are they not all the same with some tower and some desktop?

The gt 440 is relatively like a 8800/9800 gt, which is 6 cards better roughly.

The case size matter as some cases are "slim" cases, and require low profile cards, which are only certain models.

The 440 is only in a "full" size card.

The 520 is 1 to 2 cards lower than the 440, and on par with the 420.

Yes, Nvidia does not actually make cards. They make card designs, which they selll to evga, pallit, sparkle etc, who then make the card you actually buy.

I've managed to get my hands on a geforce 9600 GT, will this be compatible? Too much of a power draw? i've seen that it has a higher bench mark then the 440.

Hmm, that depends. There is 2 versions, one is 300W and 1s 400W. That said, I just realized the 8300 isn't a dedicated card.

You power supply might not be big enough for any card. You need to find out what size the psu is. I'm no longer going to help if you don't.

Nothing against you, but thats a very important need info.

Yha... Unfortunately when i found out the 8300 is on board, thats what I though.

You may get a 520/420/430 to run on it, though nvidia does claim 300W. Sorry to run you this far, then switch on you.

The minimum required psu, as stated by the companies, is 300W.

This is where you may get by on the current psu, and the new gpu, but it is not a garrentee.

You ned to decide how you want to go about it.. new gpu and risk it... or spend the cash and get both.

It might not boot. You could experience bsod, but nothing that is really damaging.

If you have the 9600 for sure try it out. I just wouldnt want you to buy it and then find out it didn't work.
