Major Graphics Card Problem

Hello, I have a huge problem with my graphics card or maybe the driver. I cannot go onto normal mode because I will always get BSOD which is this type: attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout. It happened yesterday when I started up Team Fortress 2. It was the first time I had it then but now I get it really often. However, when I left the computer for a day and returned back onto it this morning it was working fine for several hours. But after the several hours, I had the BSOD again, which I am certain will carry on happening now.

On safe mode I have these weird dotted columns on my screen on the background.
27y8wev.jpg

(I cropped the image because I don't want you seeing my shortcuts, but you get the idea)
Most of the interface is in really bad quality/bad shape like it's graphics card that is messed up. (I have like random blue squares on a black screen at the start of bootup)

I was wondering if I could fix this without getting a new graphics card?
Also, is it time for me to get a new computer? (I had this one for 5 years)

Computer Specs
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) SP2
System Manufacturer: HP-Pavilion
System Model: GS275AA-ABU IQ772.uk
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 (2 CPUs), ~1.9GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GO 7600

Sorry if it is wrong. Hard to find computer specs on safe mode.

Hi ImStuck,

No problem :) I can't really do much as I don't know much about BSODs, but by getting you to upload the dumps, it will speed up the process.

Minidumps don't contain any personal information :) It's just writes the kernel memory into a file so that when it crashes, you can identify what went wrong. There is a proper way to analyse a BSOD using Windbg (a MS tool), but I'm still learning how to do that. There is another application called BlueScreenView (by NirSoft) which will also analyse a BSOD, however I wouldn't trust it as much as Windbg. I have seen several cases where it gives false results. I have attached the BlueScreenView analysis just so you can see the sort of information in a minidump:

MGADiag

I would like you to make a MGADiag report for us please.

  1. Download MGADiag (by Microsoft) from the link found below:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

  2. Run the tool by double clicking on the file. Press Continue when prompted
  3. When it has finished, press Copy then paste this into your next post

I will ask a BSOD analyst to help :)

We still need the rest of the info from these reports: http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

The single memory dump that you posted blames your video drivers. It's STOP 0x116 error. Detailed troubleshooting instructions are in this topic: http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.htmlhttp://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...op-0x116-video_tdr_error-troubleshooting.html Even though it was written for Win7, it also applies to Vista

Your ASUS Bluetooth LED Control Driver dates from 2006 and should be updated or removed from your system.

Your Original CF0000 ACPI Utility Driver dates from 2006 also and should be updated or removed from your system.

The 2007/2008/2009 drivers are old and should be updated if possible. You can locate them in the list below here. Just below the list are a number of links to help you find out more info about the drivers - which should help you locate updates. Post back if you can't locate any.

If the above steps don't stop the BSOD's, please zip up and upload any new memory dumps with your next post - and we'll see what we can figure out from there.

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

- Further info on BSOD error messages available at: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html
- Info on how to troubleshoot BSOD's (DRAFT): http://www.carrona.org/userbsod.html

My Computer

Thanks usasma for the big help!

Some of the memory dumps could be from another BSOD which happens regularly for the pass 1-2 years but it doesn't bother me (IRQL DRIVER NOT EQUAL OR LESS THAN - BSOD)

I do not think I can update any of the drivers anymore.

A thing I forgot to say was that I ran Disk Defragmenter from AVG PC Tuneup 2011 and used the optimize tool on it. I think it defragged every single file on my computer and could be the source of the problem. I ran it before playing Team Fortress 2.

Edit: Also, I cannot system restore because of this driver problem. Also my latest system restore point vanished somehow; I used the disk cleanup tool: system restore and shadow copies cleanup, but that should have kept my latest system restore.

Edit 2:Also how do I know which drivers to uninstall. Picture of my device manager:

My Computer

AFAIK, there's no update available for the Asus thing. I even extracted the keyboard driver package without any luck.

Here's a possible update for your other older driver: Spring 2007 Original CF0000 ACPI Utility Driver - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Please tell me the results of your troubleshooting the video card:
The single memory dump that you posted blames your video drivers. It's STOP 0x116 error. Detailed troubleshooting instructions are in this topic: http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...eshooting.html Even though it was written for Win7, it also applies to Vista

Is this an HP TouchSmart PC? If so, it's not going to be possible to try another video card.

I updated the ACPI utility driver and no change.

It is a HP TouchSmart PC but I don't really want to spend money on another video card since I hate touchscreens now.

Troubleshooting is very confusing. Could you please guide me to the right instructions please. Thanks!

My Computer

I don't see anything wrong with your screen shot. Which leads me to think your screen is the issue.

Does the computer have a video out plug? If yes, try plugging in a monitor to see if the problem shows on it too.

What model do you have?

I highly doubt it is my screen. I am sure it is my driver or video card. The model can be found in a post on this thread.

I get the Stop 0x00000116 which is related to nv1ddmkm.sys everytime my graphics card overheats (I get this because I have a workstation and putting it on my lap causes the fan vents to be blocked occasionally). I mention this because you said it worked for several hours and then you got the BSOD. Are all the vents for your laptop clean of dust?

It's a desktop. The BSOD is permanent now. During the several hours i was able to play tf2 but some time after closing it my computer kept freezing badly while i was looking at a website.

I get that problem no matter what I'm doing simply because I'm accidently blocking the vents. The problem translates to a desktop if the fan on the graphics card isn't working properly or there is excess dirt on a cooling fan or fins. If the video card is fried, it will usually just boot you off. Also check the CPU fan to make sure it's not dirty and is working.

If you could get to safe mode and download HPWMonitor, you could see what the temperatures of your cpu and graphics card are.

I tried the one above from usasma called hwmonitor and it gave 36degrees celsius for all components.

Did the temps move? as my laptop sensors buggered and doesnt move.

You also should run it at full load, but unless things are rihgt wacky, 36C is a low starting and is good.

Unfortunately, some hardwares broken, and being a touch screen all in one, its going to be a bugger to track down.

Yeah the values didnt move so it could be broken. How do i make it run at full load on safe mode?
