Compaq SR5510F system.
Done a Recovery of the system. have updates thru sp2 so far.
I did a install of sp37534.exe which was an update to this card
Done a memory test and all is OK.
set show diag. at boot time and got a message about Detecting Arrays then showed Nvidia and did not catch the rest.
system hangs when starting sometimes.
sometimes when doing a restart
sometimes when doing CTL ALT DEL
on some occasions it goes from power on right to the desktop.
I have searched every where on the HP Forums and will post this one there also.
any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not to sure your problem.
Why did you do a recovery?
Did you open up the system?

Hi PatonB We did the recovery because of the startup problems occurring after doing a clean install of XP
I wanted to start back at the out of the box factory settings and install.
First problem we found was battery bios was low 2.0 and so replaced it.
then did a memory test all ok
then turned on display diagnostics when boot up and discovered that every time this system froze it was at the
Nvidia trying to do something.
this morning we set all settings on the HP W1907 monitor back to factory settings.
right now I am running system repair to see if it finds anything.
We also did a install of a KB update that was released in july 22 2008 for Nvidia problems but was more for gaming problems which re are not interested in playing games.
will know more after all this gets done and we try to bring up the system again.
all Vista updates and sp packs are in and no problems.

Do you have a gpu in the system, or are you running the onboard card?

patonB I don't even know what a GNU is so whatever the thing had when I got it is what I have. I am sorry to sound
so ignorant about this but that is why I did the recovery and wanted to start from a out of the box system.
larry sorry I guess that is GPU and I think that is a game player unit?
but no I am not using it and if it is a board that can be removed let me know. it could be a problem since I have nothing hooked up
but the mouse and the keyboard

No worres or even apologies ever needed for not knowing something.

If you knew everything you wouldn't have asked... But now mostly I know how to ask/direct things for you.

GPU = Graphics Processing Unit, it's the techie name for the Videocard. I'm pretty sure you know what that is. But you may not know if it is an add in or the one that is built on the main boards.
So my question is... Where is the monitor attached? Near the top, or in near the bottom by the keyboard and mouse plugs?

I suspect it's by the bottom.

I would try to redo the drivers from the HP site Software & Driver Downloads Compaq Presario SR5510F Desktop PC | HP® Support

The Nvidia drivers can be a lot of different things as Nvidia made the board so it can be many different parts on it that is screwing up the boot.

Hi PatonB the monitor does connect down near the bottom and it is near the keyboard and mouse connections.
still working on downloading drivers. doing one at a time.
so far nothing has changed.
did go into the bios and on boot made sure that only the cd/dvd was first and then the harddrive.
nothing else.

Okay. That confirms that you are running on the on-board videocard.

Can you be a bit more specific about how often it gets screwy?

Are the hard drives the original?

One thing you might want to do as a check is to open the case and ensure the cables are all properly plugged in tight. I've had issues with bad boots due to cables being slightly unplugged.

Hi PatonB well we were in the case. clean as new. also we had to replace the bios battery as the one in the case was at 2.o V and so we put in a new one at 3.0 and of course that did reset the Bios.
it is rare to power it up and have it go all the way to being ready at the desktop.
ctl alt del several times and away it goes.
still working on updates from when I did the recovery several days ago.
