Real World Scenario

Having (at last) created a self hosted service and client using a
wsHttpBinding binding with clientCredentialType = UserName, the only way I
can get it to work (across a vpn for now) is to add my self made certificate
into the stores on each machine.
In a real world scenaro how does my client access my service without my
server side certificate?

Any help and wisdom would be very much appreciated.
