FolderShare will temporarily be taken down for a few hours.

To complete the stabilization of the FolderShare service, it is necessary
for us to take down the service for a few hours.

I will post another message this evening when the system is online. At that
time, your clients will slowly re-connect.

Thank-you.

RE: FolderShare will temporarily be taken down for a few hours.

Thanks for the heads up, Mohammed.

The FS web site currently reports that "The service will be resumed in the
next 48 hours." Is that just a conservative estimate of when you expect FS
to be fully functional, or is it an update on your msg. below, which states
that the service will be up again this evening (Friday, PST) and "[a]t that
time, your clients will slowly re-connect."?

Thanks,
Dan

RE: FolderShare will temporarily be taken down for a few hours.

The FolderShare service will be back online within 48 hours, but it may take
a longer than that to get everything logged back on.

We will post updates over the weekend.

thx

RE: FolderShare will temporarily be taken down for a few hours.

Hi Mohammed,

In a few hours your message changed from FolderShare being taken down for a
few hours to FolderShare being taken down for 48 hours.

What change caused a few hour outage to turn into a 2 day plus outage?

Thanks,
Dan

RE: FolderShare will temporarily be taken down for a few hours.

They realized the weekend was starting.

When I read this, a chill went down my spine since many of the outages that
I've experienced over the last few months were during the weekends (claims to
the contrary about consistently stellar uptime prior to this now 7 day outage
notwithstanding.) I fear that you are correct.

Can an update address this, as well as explain the changing reports (subject
of this string suggests temporary outage "for a few hours," as did the msg.
followed by the 48+ hr admonition here and on the foldershare web site).

Thanks,

Dan

That seems likely, unfortunately.

They must have almost no manpower devoted to this project (or WAY too few
servers). Microsoft doesn't have some type of scalability in their data
centers? They should be able to add more machines to handle temporary load,
like the FS service trying to restore itself.

Imagine if Hotmail went down for 7+ days, with no realistic ETA of an uptime?

Once I saw a "few hours" yesterday night I knew that was going to mean at
least the entire weekend. One interesting note, when I went to the
Foldershare home page last night, I got a bunch of MySQL errors. Nice to
know MS uses open source instead of their own SQL Server :-)

Anyway, my folders are now hopelessly out of sync between my desktop and
laptop. I'll be manually syncing them, and then I'll have to delete the
libraries and re-create them when (if?) FolderShare comes back up so I don't
end up with a ton of duplicate files.

I'm disappointed. I work in IT, so I understand that unforeseen problems
can occur that require time to fix, but over a week is unheard of. I would
be fired if the systems I'm responsible for were down for a week. (And don't
say, "they haven't been down the whole time", they have, downtime is defined
as it not working for all users unless the problem is on the user's end).

Luckily for MS, there are no good alternative to FolderShare out there right
now, or they would have lost most of their customers this week. I may look
into seeing if I can rig something with rsync and cygwin if this continues,
though.

Maybe Google will start offering a file syncing service... :-)

Yup.. and last time I checked FS ran on PHP instead of ASP. Wonder how long
that'll take them make a good thing bad?
