Resolving duplicate files

I am a new user of FS, about 2 months in. Really love the benefits. I'm
having trouble with my financial software creating a duplicate data file
everytime I sync. The LT name is appended: "MyFile-<user on LT name>". The
FAQ that I copied in below starts to address this, but I just don't
understand what to do with last statement: "up to the user to merge the data
between the files manually" How do "merge data between files manually?"
What are the steps ?--Thanks in advance-

I do notice when I delete off these dups, then I'm prompted with a pop up
during next sync asking to the effect "delete" or"add back into
library"-concerning same-named files with a difference. BC

FAQ from FS site:
What happens when FolderShare encounters a file conflict when trying to sync
devices?
When FolderShare detects that two or more versions of a file exist with the
same name, it will warn the user and append the editing user's name and
computer name to the original file name. Both the original and conflicting
versions will be saved in the library. It is then up to the user to merge the
data between the files manually.

It's really odd to me that the MVP people on this forum and also the Support
people at FS didn't feel this topic deserved a reply. Isn't "resolving
duplicate files" worth a response ? I sure think so-- if someone is new to
FS and doesn't understand something, it might be helpful to others who are
new and who may become full, adopting customers later.

Anyway, the question was for clarification on the FAQ statement above that
says: "Both the original and conflicting versions will be saved in the
library. It is then UP TO THE USER TO MERGE THE DATA BETWEEN THE FILES
MANUALLY." I guess FS thinks that the statement is obvious or
self-explanatory--good for them.

I think I stumbled on a solution by doing this: (1) delete off the duplicate
file(s) ("My File<User on LT>") on both sides, PC and LT; (2) copy the
original file, on the PC, to a USB drive; (3) transfer by USB to LT and
overwrite corresponding (original) file on the LT. Now both sides should
have an exactly same version of the original file and FS should no longer be
generating dups. So far, no more dups.

Is guess this is what FS means by "merge data manually" !!?!

No, FS keeps making duplicates despite the above attempts. What am I not
doing ? Can someone please tell me how to resolve the dups ?? Thanks in
advance

I can only respond for myself, but since I've never seen that exact problem,
I didn't have any advice to offer. Sorry. :-)

RE: Resolving duplicate files

I think the "merge data manually" is referring to if the files is user
editable - i.e. it is an MS Word file or similar. If Foldershare detects that
the file has changed on both/multiple devices it will create duplicates
rather than overwrite one of the changed files and risk losing data. It would
then be up to the user to open both original and duplicate files and, if it
were Word, copy and paste into a third document until all the newest changes
were salvaged. Then the original and duplicate could be deleted.

So the real question, I suspect, is this: Is your financial program making
changes on both/multiple devices at the same time? If so this will confuse FS
and lead to duplicates. The only way to avoid this is to merge manually as
above OR if you have just used your software on one device, don't use it on
any other device until FS has sync'd the changes.

Yes, Analyst, I think you've hit on what is happening: I use Quicken
financial software on PC and on LT. I also use RoboForm, a form-filling and
safe-note program. It is super convenient to have FS sync these 2
applications. However, both of these keep generating dups every 2-3 syncs.
I think what is going on is that each copy of these programs has internal
changes going on, independent of the other copy. Example: Quicken auto-saves
back-up data copies on a 5-day cycle. If the cycle on the PC is a day off
from the cycle on the LT, then FS is probably sensing a change in the data
file and creates a dup. I'm not sure of the solution here except to forever
delete off dups (I never type in unique data on each copy, before syncing PC
with LT). But, FS senses some change, and if I want to have the convenience
of these libraries, I'm going to have to work around by constantly deleting
off dups. Hopefully there will be some future fix. Thx, Brad.

The only real solution is to have a PC running FolderShare that stays on
24/7 to serve as a middle-man in the transaction. There's not much Microsoft
or anyone can do unfortunately about two files that have different data in
them, unless they were to get into a record-level sync of the Quicken
database. There used to be a bit-level diffentiation tool, but I'm not 100%
if that would work with a Quicken file.
