| Guest | Files NOT being Copied - Is this a Major Problem!!?? Apparently, Foldershare (the new version), is not copying or Syncing all files. So far, I have found that files with an LNK extension are not being copied. I have uninstalled the "new" version, and reinstalled the "old" version. It does not help. Just for the notes: One side is a Windows 2003 Server R2/SP2 - Standard, the other side is a Windows XP Pro SP2. Prior to the "upgrade" everything "seemed" to work but now I have my doubts. In one sync alone, I'm missing over 300 files. Since when did Foldershare stop copying LNK files. Here's the weird thing: some folders that did sync has LNK files. I only have about 6500 files and 1.59 Gb so it's well within the "limit". You've got to wonder if other files are no longer copied. So the Questions: 1.- What happened? 2.- Are there any other files that Foldershare is no longer copying? 3.- What can be done to fix? Hope this gets someone's attention. We should not have to ride jockey on this program. Any thoughts, helps, candles or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely: Louis James (Foldershare almost didn't copy part of my name) |

| Guest | RE: Files NOT being Copied - Is this a Major Problem!!?? FolderShare has never, to my knowledge, synced LNK files. It is because most users have different paths on each computer, so if the files were synced the target of the shortcut would not be found. Just having a different username on a computer changes the path and will break a shortcut file (i.e. .LNK file). It should still sync all other files in the library, even if a LNK file exists. FolderShare does not sync certain files because of compatibility issues with that file type or OS problems that occur when it is synced (e.g. desktop.ini). Some files that FolderShare does not sync are: *.lnk thumbs.db desktop.ini *.DS_Store ..fsLockFile lockfile.lck "LouisJJames" wrote:

| Guest | RE: Files NOT being Copied - Is this a Major Problem!!?? Jeremy: On the contrary sir. I am absolutely 100% sure that Foldershare did in fact copy LNK files and whatever else you threw at it except for .fslockfile file. In fact, I know this because I had hoped that you would come up with some ability to "exclude" files at some point. You say, "some files that Foldershare does not sync are..." Yikes!!! That seems to imply that there are other files that you are not syncing. Why isn't that in the FAQ's or Help Central or whatever you call it today. That should have been plastered all over the place. Why would I want to copy LNK files? Hey that's an excellent question if I say so myself? During backups, I will "backup" the user's c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu as well as the desktop. Both will contain lnk or shortcuts. Here's why!!! Should a system crash, first of all, Desktop may actually contain data. So that's obvious. But many users will create shortcuts to data and never really know where the data is at. The LNK or shortcut gives me a clue as to where the data is/was. Hopefully, (if they followed my instructions to always store in the My Documents folder), I will find the data and can recreate the link or shortcut. So the backup of the shortcut or LNK file becomes a tool to make sure that I've covered the bases on the restore. Additionally on the desktop, people link to restore their computer to the "way it was". If I can put the shortcuts or LNK files back to the way it was before the crash, they feel more comfortable about the restore. I most likely will recreate the LNK or shortcuts anyway but the backup acts as a punch list. Same goes true with the Start Menu. I NEVER restore the start menu but I use it as a guide to make sure that I've reinstalled the apps that the user had on his/her system. So if I see that Johnny Q User had Quickbooks in the Start Menu, I don't restore the start menu from the backup, I reinstall Quickbooks because the backup of the start menu acts as a punch list. You might say, well, the user should know what they have on the system. Yea, OK!!! Sure!!! And Gasoline prices are going to go back to $0.99/gallon next week. In all, you have got to tell us what you all have decided not to copy. I don't think anyway does it say in the FAQ's that "thou shalt not copy xxx or yyy" Your front page on your website says "Keep files in sync across your computers" Well, not all files. Some Files... Some times.... It might... What happens is the poor user decides to create a document with an LNK extension? Stupid?? Maybe! But it does happen. You might say, they can't do that. If you allow Windows to show the extensions, absolutely then can, they will and they have. Look forward to hearing from you. Louis James "Jeremy Epling [MSFT]" wrote:
