How dows this product relate to SkyDrive or Home Server?

Hi!

Windows Live has really developeed into a set of useful tools. I use custom
domains, SkyDrive, live calendar, Windows Live Mail, sync with WM6 device and
more, in short almost every Live service I know, ans still I discover new
ones all the time .

But how does FolderSharing correspond to Windows Home Server, Office Live
Workspace or SkyDrive? I mean on all three platforms you can share and access
files from practically anywhere. Yes I know Home Server isn't a Live offering
but still, Live is primarily aimed at the same market segment, right?

Are these services meant to compliment eachother and work together or are
they targeting different audiences or adressing different needs?

Foldersharing would be great for accessing a file from somewhere else, but
SkyDrive or Office Live workspace does the same thing provided the shared
file is a document, and if it's NOT a document foldersharing and SkyDrive or
even Spaces if it's an image, will do the same thinf for you.

So, are you supposed to use these services together or choose one or the
other that fits your need the most?

As you've pointed out, there's some strong synergy between SkyDrive and
FolderShare - I expect that the Microsoft teams involved know that as well,
so you never know what you might see. :-)

Well, that's exactly the problem. Telling the community "you never know
what you might see" is nothing you should be smiling about. The reason Hasse
asked the question in the first place is because, like a LOT of us in the
community, we're trying to plan which of the barrage of new tools should we
begin using? Which of these
nearly-identical-tools-but-totally-different-services are going to die, or
get better, or merge together, or become paid-subscription services?

Do YOU know what we might see? :-( If so, please start sharing your
knowledge with the community.

While all these services (the new Live services, Vista features, SharePoint
tools, Office Live, etc. etc.) are all very exciting -- I'm losing track of
what the heck Microsoft is doing. There seems to be a major announcement
every day about some new revolutionary tool that is intended to move the
whole community into a new era of productivity and soulful enlightenment.

Methinks thou dost protest too much. FolderShare and SkyDrive are completely
different tools, with completely different functionality. You're suggesting
that you somehow have to make a choice between these two, and I don't see
how or why that's the case. Why do you need to know the future plans of the
FolderShare team in order to use or not use SkyDrive?

Re: How dows this product relate to SkyDrive or Home Server?

The problem is that I on one hand is concerned about security and on the
other I like ease of access. Using foldershare I can sync my files and access
my computer remotely, But do I really like the idéa of that easy access to my
computer? the one I work with? But the pro with this is that storage space is
unlimited, just add another drive....

On the other hand, SkyDrive. Hmm I can put less important filer there for
easy access from anywhere, if I'm concerned about security. Or if I trust
SkyDrive to be as secure as my own computer, I can put whatever there, BUT
space is limited to 5GB.

Office Live seems to be a wonderful place to store documents. online viewing
without Office installed!, Versioning, lists and reminders, so for documents
this is super. But not for other filetypes, such as zip files, pictures
executables and such.

Homeserver has secure access from anywhere, no fishy service that connect
and sync stuff. limitless storage and if you throw in a WSS 3.0 site on it,
maybe not supported, but possible, I have the best media sharing, file
sharing with alerts and versioning, and home backup solution there is... or
do I?

I might not really have understood foldersharing, but I can explain how I
have perceved it and you might correct me:

Foldersharing let you sync files between computers, but are they stored
somewhere else too? doesn't this solution require at least that 2 computers
that you sync are on at the same time? if not, where does the files go
inbetween? I personally preferr to lug around my laptop instead of syncing
several computers in this way, so maybe foldersharing isn't for me? Can
someone who like it ALOT explain the greatness of this solution to me?

Yes, that's correct - your files are only ever stored on your two computers,
not on any server.

With SkyDrive, your files are stored on the Microsoft's server.
