| | FolderShare behind a NAT I have 2 PCs in my home behind a NAT. I have setup the two PC's to sync up Documents, Videos, Music, etc. Does FolderShare transfer data over my private LAN or does it go through the internet? It seems to go over the internet as I got my internet connection bill and there seems to be a huge charge for download - I know that prior to this setup I did not have this kind of download charges. How can I verify if this is a local transfer or over the internet? Currently, the UPNP checkbox is "checked" anything else I need to do? |

It seems to go over the internet large file to one of your shared folders and watching how fast it transfers (use More|ViewActivity from the FolderShare right-click menu). Assuming both PCs have 100Mb/s LAN adapters or faster, you should see the file transfer at faster than 1MB/s. This shows that the traffic isn't being routed onto the Internet (unless you have a very fast uplink). Note that the window displays the speed in BYTES per second, not bits per second -- multiply by ten to get a rough idea in bits per second. Most ADSL uplinks I've seen are in the 256Kb/s to 1Mb/s range. richi. www.richij.com |

| | Re: FolderShare behind a NAT I wish there was a better way to verify - reason I say is last month my internet bill showed a very high amount of data download just around the time I configured FolderShare. Subsequently, I also read that FolderShare uses internet to transfer data. If it's not working right, check the subnet mask setting on both PCs and in the router itself. Who is your ISP? By the way, you don't need UPnP. I recommend you turn it off -- it's a security hole waiting to happen. richi. www.richij.com |
