| | Clarification of Syncing Needed I have a database that I want to keep synced between my desktop and laptop. I set up the library on each computer and chose the folder where the database resides for syncing. The folder name is the same on both computers. The folder and it's files synced from the desktop to the laptop without a problem. What I don't understand and didn't realize is that the filename gets changed after accessing and changing the database. The program I'm using automatically opens the same database each time I open it. Not knowing the filename was changed, I ended up screwing up my database after using it from both computers. I had the original database, one called dbname_laptop_date and another called dbname_desktop_date on both computers. Now, is there a way to keep the database name from changing? Is it going to change every time I make changes to the database? I really don't want to have to tell the program I'm using to use a different database every time I use it. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jo Anne |

| | RE: Clarification of Syncing Needed Why do you have the database named differently between the two computers? I'd think if you want the database synced between the two computers correctly, they'd be identically named. | | RE: Clarification of Syncing Needed I didn't name them differently, the sync process did. I started out with avon.av4db and upon updating and then syncing it from the desktop, the name was changed to avon on desktop.av4db. And if I make the change on the laptop, a file called avon on laptop.av4db is created. I want the filename to remain the same on both computers but that's not what the syncing is doing and thus my problem and confusion. There's no way it can merge the changes, because it can't know about the format of the database, much less the meaning of the data. A simple file sync utility like FS is generally not appropriate for multi-master sync of databases. Look to the database vendor for tools to synchronize separate instances. richi. www.richij.com |

| | Re: Clarification of Syncing Needed Hi Jo, When FolderShare encounters the same file, on separate computers, with different edits it will automatically make a copy of the edits and downloaded the latest versions on each computer. This normally occurs if you edit the file on an online computer A and then make different edits to the same file on an offline computer B. Instead of removing your changes the files are renamed. The best way to prevent this is to make sure you don't have the same file opened on a different computer and before making any edits to the file ensure that you have the latest version. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
