How does Foldershare detect change?

I don't understand how foldershare detects a change in a file. I'm used to
unix rsync, where two versions of a file are considered different if they
differ in timestamp or size -- or as an option, if they differ in checkksum.

Foldersort seems a bit more subtle. For example:
- changing a long-ago timestamp to slightly-less long ago does not appear to
trigger a copy, though changing it to 'now' does
- moving a file out of the foldershare directory and then back in also
doesn't (so it doesn't appear to use a filesystem-trigger)
- I haven't checked file sizes, but I presume that any change in file size
would be interpreted as a file change

Any help out there?

Re: How does Foldershare detect change?

If the contents of a file change, that is seen as a change. FolderShare does
not take into account timestamps.

May we be told what is used by FolderShare to detect a change of contents?

I can understand why FolderShare does not waste bandwidth resources to
transfers files with later timestamps and unchanged contents, however if
FolderShare could update any earlier timestamps to the latest ones, that
feature would better inform users that the files have been synchronized.

I asked that one month ago and go not answer. I now find that indeed
FolderShare can not accurately detect file changes or differences. I'd
been merrily assuming that FolderShare could detect file differences and
would synchronize appropriately but today I have discovered that indeed it
can't tell all changes and misses some. I've found changed files where the
file size never changed and FolderShare never picked up the change and
propagated the new file version. So be warned - this system is flakey.

Would someone at MS please address this issue.

FS has no ticket or formal support system, just this group where MS staff
appear to pick and choose where to respond and what to address. Maybe MS
should either take this business seriously or else can it, because this
present amateurish effort is less than useful.
