| Vista Business 32bit | what file name is too long to sync? I've had Foldershare syncing My Documents on two computers for almost a year. Sometime last week i noticed that it wasn't syncing on one computer. When i try to connect it back, it gives me an error saying a file on the other computer is too long to sync! That's fine, I'll change the name. BUT WHAT FILE IS IT? Where can I find the name of the file its having problems with? Thanks everybody! |

| | RE: what file name is too long to sync? Thanks for your post. There must be some utilities to help you find certain length of filename. However, it could get done by following steps. On the machine that has long path file or folder (which causes other machine get disconnected from the library) 1.Open a Command window 2.Go to the folder that has mapped to the disconnected library. e.g. >cd “C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents” 3.C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents>dir /b /s > C:\filelist.txt 4.Open C:\filelist.txt using Notepad.exe 5.On Notepad, View -> check “Status bar” to see length of each file on the right bottom 6.Check if any file/folder is over 240 chars long as scroll down the list 7.If there are any, rename them to shorter name Here is how to reconnect the library 1.On the taskbar, click the FolderShare beta icon , and then click "FolderShare website" 2.Click the library that you're trying to connect to. 3.Click Sync with a new computer. 4.In the list of available computers, click the computer that was disconnected from the library. 5.Select a folder or create a new folder that you want to sync, and then click Next. 6.Choose the sync setting you want, and then click Finish Thank you. | | Re: what file name is too long to sync? That's strange. Can you reply to kyonghwan(dot)kim(at)hotmail(dot)com with answers to following questions? 1. What OS are you running? XP, Vista or W2K3 2. What is the actual folder path that is mapped to the FolderShare library? e.g. C:\xxxx\yyyy\zzzz 3. What command did you run and which directory? "dir /b /s >c:\filelist.txt" 4. Is there "filelist.txt" under "C:\" but its contents is empty? or there is no "filelist.txt" under C:\? Thank you. "savesheep" wrote: Quote: > > You are a god! | Vista Business 32bit | Re: what file name is too long to sync? I was testing it at home on an xp machine, couldn't get it to work right. But at work, on vista business, it worked excellently. THANK YOU SOO MUCH But just out of curiosity, on the xp machine, it created the text file but it was blank. I did the exact same command in vista as i tried in xp. I browsed to the folder: dir /b /s > c:\file.txt It created it, but no contents. Vista worked perfect. I mapped a network drive to the other computer so I could just open cmd and goto y: instead of the lengthy path. This did find the files that were super long though, and I deleted them and foldershare works perfect. You are a genius. |

| Ultimate x32 | Users of Syn Toy 1.4/2.0 Beta This post apply to XP/Vista 32bit (only): I mention 2 utilities out there--free--to troubleshoot your long files when sync your folders (hard to believe, it is mostly the case with the Microsoft KB files you save in your Favorites folder: they often have file names ridiculously too long.) The Crap one: you ll find it easily browsing, but not only it is ugly (unless you miss your old Amiga), but it is also completly useless (you cannot search folders, you cannot set the file's name lenght, etc). Name: Long File Path Lister 1 ~~piece of crap Downlaod: Long File Path Lister - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com The nice one is there: Name: Long Filenames Finder Download: Long Filenames Finder If the tip helps someone, I am glad to read a thank back in the thread.
