Vista - Port Status Tab in Settings

Port Status Tab in Settings

I have Foldershare set up to work behind my router between two computers on a
wireless network. The data that is to be synchronized between these two
computers is always on the wireless network controlled by a wireless router
and is never accessed from the other side of the router (i.e. the Internet).
After changing the data on one computer, the files are not synchronized,
although there are entries in Foldershare that indicate files have been
transferred. When I look at thea Settings box under the port status tab, I
notice that on one computer all four TCP ports (80, 443, 6571, 8000) are
"Blocked" under the "Accect Connections" column on one computer and the other
has either all blocked or two of them blocked. Do these ports have to be
"unblocked" to accept connections or data from the other computer, when both
computers are working behind a router with a built-in firewall? If they have
to be "unblocked" how do I go about doing that? My assumption is that there
is no connection with the FolderShare server required if I have no remote
access selected for the computers. True?

No. Indeed those don't even need to be unblocked when synchronising with
computers away from your local network although there would be a speed
benefit in that situation because doing that enables p2p connections. You
can get full speed p2p connections between the hosts on your LAN just by
educating the firewalls of your computers and without needing to set up
port forwarding in your gateway router.

Your computers must have access to the MS FS servers because they keep the
master indexes of the files in your libraries. But you do not need to open
inward connections to the FS ports of your computers to enable that.

Thanks. What would cause the files not to synchronize then? Both computers
indicate they have sent updated files to the other computer in the activity
section of the FS application, but when one compares the files they are
different. If the FS server is down for instance, will that cause the files
to not synchronize?

If the files have been sent and received I can think of no reason for them
to be different. Are you sure you are looking at the right files?

I don't understand the question. If the FS servers are down your computers
will not be able to find each other or be told which files to send and to
receive.

If I look at the FS logs on each computer, they each identify changes made
to the files and when they were sent to the other computer. There is nothing
in either log that indicates files have been received from the other
computer. Should there be such a log entry? Thanks.
