Re: Tray icon does not dissapear when i close live mail

Thanks for your input Norman, and your confirmation that leaving the "Upload
Larger Images to The Web When Sending a Photo E-mail" box un-checked after
creating a message also causes wlmail.exe to continue running for you after
closing the program. I agree that the taskbar icon issue in your case is
probably because you have the "Hide window when Inbox is minimized" option
selected.
It's strange that un-checking this "larger images" option would prevent WLM
from closing. Perhaps it is checked by default and that is why more people
are not experiencing this issue. But, I certainly do want want to be forced
to upload larger images to the web. Anyway, what does Microsoft consider
large? 500K, 1M, 5M ???

It seems that 3 conditions are causing WLM to not close:
being signed in to Windows Live,
"Upload Larger Images..." unchecked,
and open a message composition window.
Does WLM close if you are not signed in to Windows Live and the other two
conditions are meet?

I only have five listed boxes. I suspect that if you didn't sign in, you
will not have the sixth box.

Indeed, the option is checked by default. I had to change it to test because
I wasn't seeing the issue otherwise. I haven't really used that option, so I
don't have a clue.

Yes. When I select to "Stop signing in to Windows Live", WLM closes properly
on the "X" close with the other two conditions met.

Indeed, when I change the option so I am not signed in to Windows Live on
starting Windows Live Mail, I do not have that sixth box in the menu.

It sounds like an untested condition which the design team should address.

I had what you may be seeing last night. It's not a hang; it's some kind
of I/O loop. E.g. in Task Manager nothing was changing except
I/O Other and that statistic was going up dramatically.

FWIW I have changed my compaction interval to 1 so I have been getting
that prompt every time I close WLMail. Last night was the first time I tried
to say No to the prompt... So, if you were getting a non-displayable prompt
(because you decide to Exit) and the default action in that state was No
and this loop is always the result to replying No, I still think that would be
the source of your symptom. ; )

Next time I get this I'm going to try to remember to use Process Explorer
to see what files WLMail still has open.

Quote:

> Fault Module Name: UXCore.dll
FWIW I have crashes in that module occasionally. Different offsets.
(Just checked with evntvwr and there were more than I thought. <w>)
It would probably be a good idea to use ProcMon to capture the Stack
at the time of the crashes. Even better to have symbols enabled,
so ProcMon could show you the routine names involved too.

Before killing WLMail please confirm if you see the loop with I/O Other.
As I explained it is a good idea to do that before killing it anyway,
in case the loop really involves I/O Write, in which case you are risking
corrupted files.

Re: Tray icon does not dissapear when i close live mail

At least we know now why it happens!

I wonder if this is related to Windows Live Mail also polling for new
messages even though I have that option disabled?
