Hi fieseler:
I'm not sure if it's weird, but it is unresolved. This bug is several
builds old; yet, it seems to be resolved on most of my systems since
the previous build.

How did you shutdown live mail? If you right-click on the tray icon
and select "Exit", does it go away?
Thanks,

Same problem here. Only seems to happen after I've sent a msg. Shutting down
tray icon doesn't help. Have to open task bar and kill it there.

I've found that, if I just ignore the icon and continue working, the NEXT
time I switch on my computer and connect and then when I close WLM again,
the icon goes away normally. Perhaps it is synching something somewhere and
needs to be 'in action' as it were...
Hope this helps,
Russel

Same problem here using Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme
or reason.

I have the same problem only my tray icon disappears but the wlmail process
doesn't close on exit. I can't start live mail again until I kill all the
wlmail processes that are running.

I hope you are at least inspecting what they are doing,
e.g. using Task Manager's Processes tab and delaying
your killing spree if there is any activity (especially I/O activity)
associated with them? You may have to use the View menu
to add additional statistics; otherwise use Process Explorer.
For example, apparently WLM still has some kind of compaction
procedure which may operate *after* you close it. Killing it
in the middle of that might result in corrupting whatever files
it would have been updating. Etc.
In that scenario I imagine what might be happening is that
you have reached the limit of the number of closes before
the cleanup procedure gets invoked so it starts doing its thing
in the background under the closing task. So then if you
terminate it prematurely I suspect what could happen is that
you would just see the same thing the next time until you
a) allow the cleanup procedure to complete or b) disable
the cleanup procedure (e.g. in the Maintenance dialog
before closing the application.)
FWIW I have yet to see either feature in effect,
so I don't know exactly what you can see
and the above is just (educated) speculation.

I did a little experimentation and concur with WayneD. The wlmail.exe
process still runs in Task Manager after closing Live Mail, but only if you
create a new message. You don't even need to send it. Yet, replying to a
message works OK and Live Mail closes fine. Interesting.
