Re: I would ike to leave the program running on the taskbar

Yes, click on the Windows Live Mail icon in the System Tray and check the option: 'Hide window when Inbox is minimized'

In Vista, right-click on the Quick Launch Toolbar->Properties->Notification Area [tab]-> un-check 'Hide inactive icons'.
In XP, right-click on the Quick Launch Toolbar->Properties->Notification Area [section]-> un-check 'Hide inactive icons'.

Re: I would ike to leave the program running on the taskbar

Also, you cannot close WLM you just have to minimize it and it will sit in
the "Notification Area". If you close it using the X, it will do exactly
that and you will not receive any notifications of incoming e-mails.

Windows Live Mail does not work like IM programs, which break the standard
function of the "X-Close" button; WLM actually closes, as any other normal
application does, when pressing the "X-Close" button. Use the standard
"Minimize" button to minimize WLM to the System Tray; same as you would for
any rational application.
