Syncronisation of contacts

Hello,

does anybody know how the syncronisation of the contacts between Windows
Contacts (Vista), Live Contacts, Live Mail and Live Messenger works?

Because I do not use a hotmail-mailaddress, I can not open the webpage of
Windows Contacts :-(

Windows Live Mail imported after the first login with the Live ID all
Windows contacts and they are now visible in Live Messenger and Live
Mail/Live Contacts.
But there seems to be no automatically sync, so I started a manual import.
And the tool imported ALL contacts not only the missing. So I had many
duplicate contacts. Hours later the contacts were also vissible in Live
messenger...

So, I do not understand how the components work together :-(
But hopefully someone knows...

Kind regards
Till

Re: Syncronisation of contacts

I'll try this one. WLmessenger, WL Hotmail, WLMail all share the same
contacts, however they are NOT the same as the standard Vista contacts as
found in the Contacts folder, with .contact extensions.
Logging into Live Hotmail and selecting the contacts button on the bottom
will then give you options to merge contacts, which will THEN sync with
Messenger and WLMail. Make sure you also sign into MSN through WLMail (top
right of menu bar) with your hotmail/MSN ID. That will make sure WLMail and
Hotmail and Messenger will all sync together. I have found if you make a
change on a contact through WLMail, it will sync with Hotmail in a matter of
seconds. Seems to take a bit longer if you change contacts through hotmail
for those changes to show up in WLMail.
Hope that helps..

Re: Synchronization of contacts

To echo Sandman's response.
a. No sync occurs with Vista's Contacts(used exclusively for Vista's Windows
Mail)
b. If a hotmail, live, or msn.com address is not used in Windows Live
Mail(WLM), even though then no sync occurs with the Hotmail.
c. If you use a non hotmail, live, or msn.com address and register that as a
Live ID it does not sync with Hotmail.
d. If you use a non hotmail, live, or msn.com address and register that as
a Live ID it will sync with Windows Live Messenger(WLMg)

Imo, the safest way to sync both WLM and WLMg Contacts is to have one open
application open, finish any editing, then open the other
application(sign-on with the same ID) . Walk away. Sync will occur. If the
Contact list is long, it will take awhile.
- I've about a 100 in my contact list and all sync within a few minutes.

Assuming you do not have a Hotmail address and your WMLg and WLM email
address is registered as a Live ID.
The easiest method when a large quantity of contacts is present requiring
removal of duplicates when an out of sync condition like yours has occurred
without a Hotmail account is to export the file to *.csv format and use
Excel to perform the deletion (each contact record will be a row). Save the
file as a *. csv, saved it again as a backup.(Ensure you choose to save it
as a CSV (Comma Delimited) *.csv file in Excel.

***Once the above is done..then and only then...***
You can probably do the following with both apps open, but I've had best
success with a 'one at a time' approach.
- Logon to WLM using the Live ID common to both(WLM and WLMg
- Delete all contacts(a message will popup informing that doing so will
remove all from Hotmail and the other application).
- Close WLM. Ensure it is not present in the Systray(Notification Area)
or as process(Ctrl Shift Esc = Task Manager)
- Open WLMg let it sync and ensure it is void of contacts.
- Close WLMg, ensure it is not running in the Systray(right click\close
if present)
- At this point both apps will be void of Contacts
- Open WLM and import the contacts from the Excel edited and saved *.csv
file. Map the fields properly if necessary
The next open of WLMg the sync will occur.

Don't double-click the .csv file to open it in Excel. (What follows is for Excel 2003; in earlier versions you may have to use Data
Quote:

on the next page , check "Comma". On the next page, find any columns containing phone numbers, click on the column heading (which
will probably say 'General') and select the Text radio button. Otherwise, Excel will strip any leading zeroes from phone numbers or
display them in E format or even truncate them.
Beware of rows which only contain bits from a Notes field that includes newline characters.
