New version of Windows Live?

Today my Hotmail inbox in WLM contained a message that a new version of
Windows Live is available at http://www.windowslive.co.uk/get-live.

I'm currently running 12.0.1606.

I'm confused, from Windows Live Mail Desktop it went to WLM but this one
is called just Windows Live.

Unfortunately, it doesn't say WHAT version it is and also, shouldn't
Windows Auto Updates inform me of any new version?

I'd appreciate some info to help me understand exactly what is what.
Thanks.

Re: New version of Windows Live?

Just the same old versions I believe, unless they have integrated the recent update of Windows Live Writer into the existing Windows Live Installer, and consider that reason enough to announce that "a new version of Windows Live is available"

Re: New version of Windows Live?

Apparently it has "Writer" plus photo gallery, toolbar option etc.

Is WLM just a standalone e-mail handling part of Windows Live?

Hope it is because I don't want yet another all-in-one application
trying to take over the world.

If so, then I wont bother with the full monty.

Re: New version of Windows Live?

Windows Live is a suite of separate programs, including WLMail, which are separate and are installed separately through the unified installer. You have the latest version of WLMail installed.

Re: New version of Windows Live?

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know.

What been confusing me is that when I first installed WLM, it put a
shortcut in my start programs called Windows Live Mail, fair enough.
However, this led me to believe it was a totally separate program and
seeing "New version of Windows Live" confused me.

As Windows Live is a suite with albeit separate options, I would have
expected to see Windows Live in my start programs with an extension
arrow to WLM (or Photo Gallery, Writer etc., if I had opted to install
them).

All of the live services I installed shows in the all programs|windows live. You don't have them? See inline pic.

Re: New version of Windows Live?

Hi, CB - and Smirnoff.

On my Vista Start menu, WLM is listed twice in All Programs: First as an
individual app (right after Windows Fax and Scan), then as a member of the
Windows Live family - way down at the bottom of the menu.

No, I don't.

In Start menu I have an (envelope favicon) Windows Live Mail, no
extension arrow.

Perhaps it is because I originally downloaded it when it was beta. It
has obviously been updated since. As I never downloaded it from the
"suite", could be the reason it appears as standalone.

Well, I took the plunge and downloaded Windows Live from the Hotmail
e-mail link.

I only selected WLM and Messenger (which is all I had anyway).

Installed OK and it kept all my contacts, saved files etc. (should have
thought about that before trying it, phew!).

When I looked at Start Menu, Windows Live Mail had stayed where it was.

At the end of the list I now had Windows Live >(extension arrow) Windows
Live Messenger.

Underneath that I had a standalone Windows Live Messenger (one extreme
to the other).

Anyway, created another shortcut for WLM, went into Win Explorer>Start
Menu and dragged it into Windows Live folder.

Deleted both standalone shortcuts in Start Menu, hey presto.

What a performance.

I don't even have an envelope icon in my Start menu, but I do have a "winged
horse" (Pegasus, for the Pegasus Mail application, which is my default mail
client).

Windows Live Mail is listed in my "All Programs" menu, along with other
applications that launch from that menu. It is also listed in the "Windows
Live" group folder, along with Windows Live Messenger. I have not installed
any of the other "Windows Live" applications, so only WLMail and WLMessenger
are listed.
