| Guest | Trouble installing windows live mail Trying to install windows live mail on my wifes notebook and I keep getting message "not connected to internet" when I most certainly am. Have tried reboots, saved installation file to desktop, reset modem and router... all with no luck. How do you install this program??? |

I had that symptom too. The problem appears to be that, depending on some timing factor which I haven't yet been able to figure out, I have two possible connections to the Internet, either directly through a PPPoE connection or indirectly through my modem as a local connection. The latter connection seems to be unacceptable to the WL Installer. OE and WLM see a related symptom e.g. as seen in their Status windows and typically when they show the connection as Local Area Connection... it is slower and less reliable but it does work. An even more reliable test of being in the problem state or in the good state is to use the XP Help and Support (Win-F1) Support menu and try using the Get help from Microsoft link. When I try it sometimes (now, for example) I get is the message "An Internet Connection is Required" with a Connect button to use. The Connect button gives me the option of hanging up my PPPoE connection! So I guess this proves that I am in the good state and that particular app would only work in the problem state? (That's not how I remembered it BTW.) ; } I did remember it correctly. It's just not as straight forward as I was implying. I had to hang up the PPPoE connection, (even though both OE and WLM could see it fine), and reconnect. Then the Get help from Microsoft link worked without any sign of a prompt about picking a connection. YMMV. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- | ||||||||||||
