Reading Pane Toggle

Hello,
Is there a way to switch the Reading Pane off and on other than using
the Reading Pane Icon in the tool bar and going through the 2 choices. In my
case I prefer the Reading Pane on the bottom so I need to hit the Reading
Pane Icon twice to get that choice as I now have it set up.

Thank You in advance,

Larry W

Alt-V,L,Alt-w

BTW I don't understand why I have to press Alt-w (instead of just w)
in that Layout dialog. Perhaps it has something to do with it now being
non-modal?

FWIW this is an example of one of my major usability annoyances with WLMail.
In OE I regularly use doubleclicking on all of the Next, Preview, and Next Conversation
buttons as shortcuts when navigating through a message list.

The only good thing about all these usability defects is that I am going to have
to learn some scripting--to figure out how to use SendKeys to reprogram
some unused keyboard functions and mouse actions. ; )

Hi, Larry.

Click View | Layout and toggle whatever you like. ;<)

I don't even see a "Reading Pane Icon in the tool bar". Which version of
WLM are you using? In Vista or WinXP?

Re: Reading Pane Toggle

R. C. That toggle button is in the Customize Toolbar function. On mine,
it's toward the bottom of the list. I added it and it works fine for me.
Apparently OP would prefer keyboard shortcuts to using the mouse.

Re: Reading Pane Toggle

Hi RC,
The reading pane icon is available when you customize the toolbar. In
some of the news readers/e-mail clients there is usually a single key toggle
for the reading pane such as "F8". That is what I was hoping to find for
WLM but it seems it is not an option.

Well, yes - and no. Some weird things have been happening here. :>(

Here in the Microsoft Communities, also known as Microsoft Public
Newsgroups, that option is not available on the Customize Toolbar menu - but
it is on the menu when I'm reading a Usenet NG. I was looking at Customize
Toolbars while reading in this public NG when I sent my earlier post, and
when I started this message.

And now, the weirdity! After visiting a Usenet NG and seeing the Reading
Pane toggle, and then coming back here, NOW the toggle is available here,
too! ???

This is accompanied by other strange behaviors. When I first started this
WLM session, there were 15 unread emails. I read them all, and the number
in the Status Bar changed to "0 unread" - but the number of "Unread e-mail"
in Quick views stayed at 15. Other numbers refused to decrement, too, such
as here in this newsgroup. Now that the Reading Pane toggle is available
here, too, those "unread" numbers also have decremented.

All I can think of is that I might not have given WLM enough time to finish
its housekeeping chores when I shut it down earlier today, so it may have
been busy with that for a while after I restarted it for this session.
Maybe it didn't decrement the Unread counts - or turn on the Reading Pane
toggle - until it had time to clean up from the previous shutdown. WLM
didn't complain about anything, though. I'm still mystified, and I'm only
guessing at the explanation.

For now, I agree with both Larrys.

Re: Reading Pane Toggle

Hi, Larry.

As I said, WEIRD!

Yesterday, when I started WLM for the first time of the day, there were 12
Unread emails in my Inbox. I read them all. The Status Bar then showed 0
unread. But the Quick views Unread e-mail still showed 12. Switching to
newsgroups just added to the weirdness. There, too, reading messages
reduced the Unread count in the Status Bar but not in the Folder Pane. When
I switched back to Unread e-mail, the count in Quick views still showed 12,
but NO unread messages were listed. I even closed WLM and restarted it;
Quick view still showed 12 unread, but none were there to be read.

It was while those counts were screwed up that I read the OP in THIS thread,
by Larry W., and the response by Robert Aldwinckle. Robert is the guru of
keystrokes vs. mouse-clicks, and, among other comments, he recommended:
Quote:

> Alt-V,L,Alt-w
Without quoting Robert, I replied directly to the OP and gave the equivalent
mouse-click sequence: View | Layout. Whichever way we choose to bring it
up, this produces a screen from which we can toggle on or off the Reading
Pane, Folder Pane, etc., and choose their locations on the screen.

But the OP had a Reading Pane icon in the Toolbar and was looking for
another way toggle its settings. I didn't have such a button in my Toolbar,
so I tried to add one. I right-clicked the Toolbar and clicked Customized
Toolbar. This brought up the screen to "Choose buttons for this toolbar".
There is a long list under "Available buttons". But the list wasn't long
enough - and "Show/Hide reading pane" was NOT in the list. That's when I
posted my first reply, reporting that I didn't see that option.

By then, my WLM had been running for several minutes (half-hour?) and its
behavior had changed. Now, the "12 unread" had disappeared from the Quick
views list, and other counts looked correct, too. Back in the newsgroups, I
right-clicked the Toolbar again, then Customize Toolbar. Voila! The
"Available buttons" list was much longer. It included "Synchronize Account"
now, along with "Show/Hide folder pane", "Show/Hide reading pane" and
several others. That's when I sent my second Reply.

My first impression was that the short version of Available Buttons was
limited to the MS public NGs. But, since WLM "returned to normal", the long
version is here, too.

Currently, here in this MS public NG, I can right-click the Toolbar, then
click Customize Toolbar, and then choose from Available buttons, including
"Show/Hide reading pane". When I add that button to my Toolbar, it's a
3-way toggle: Off, show on right, show at bottom (which is my normal
choice).

I'm still not sure what caused the "unread count"-"short list of available
buttons" situation yesterday, but all seems normal now. This sounds like a
job for the WLM Team, but I don't know how to repro the problem. It MIGHT
happen when WLM is restarted after a hasty shutdown that does not allow it
time for a proper cleanup, but that is only a supposition on my part. But
the two anomalies seem to be somehow related.

Re: Reading Pane Toggle

Hi, Larry.

If it happens again, I'll try to gather some evidence!

As to the possibility that it was detritus from a quickie shutdown, I recall
that a couple of days ago I was in a hurry and I shut down by pressing the
computer's power button, rather than press the Windows key, right-arrow 3
times, then Enter. But the power button is supposed to do a graceful
shutdown, as I learned here to my surprise a few months ago. And I'm pretty
sure that I already had exited WLM before pressing the button. But maybe I
didn't.
