| | scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? I have a new Epson scanner (vista compatible) with a scan to email button. When pressed it asks me to select an email client via a drop down menu. The only one listed is WM. This is not my default email program....WLM is. I obviously don't want to use WM, even if it is just for using this feature. I spoke to Epson about it and so far WLM is not supported. This is not the first software I've had this problem with. Where 3rd party software accessed WM, is WLM being made capable of stepping in under these circumstances? Does anyone know a work around for this problem? Many thanks. |

| | Re: scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? Although WLM may be your default email program, that doesn't mean that all possible defaults have been assigned to it. Open Default Programs, click on "Set your default programs." After the program list comes up, click on Windows Live Mail. If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults" fix it by clicking on "Set this program as default." -- Gary VanderMolen (MS-MVP WLM) "Ian Cockram" <iancockram@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:6D5F9C3E-066C-4341-98CB-BF618B9F5B21@xxxxxx Quote: >I have a new Epson scanner (vista compatible) with a scan to email button. | | Re: scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? I can't think of any other setting in Vista that would affect this. But you would think that the scanner software is getting its list of email programs from somewhere within Vista. -- Gary VanderMolen (MS-MVP WLM) "Ian Cockram" <iancockram@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:677071B6-74CA-4D2D-A083-356777777B25@xxxxxx Quote: > Thanks for the suggestion Gary. | | Re: scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? I cant speak for Epson scanners, but I had the same problem with my Canon scanner. To link to WLMail, I added a new Value to the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver4.1\Devices\MAPI In that key I found a list of six e-mail programs, where the Values for that key were the numbers 1 to 6 with the Data for each Value simply being the name of an e-mail program. Windows Live Mail was not included in this list, so I added it thus: Right-clicked on the above mentioned key->New->String Value. I named the new Value '7', then double-clicked the new Value and entered 'Windows Live Mail' in the 'Value Data:' field. I then opened up CanoScan Toolbox and selected the Mail button. I then found 'Windows Live Mail' listed under 'Link scanned images to'->'Set'. After selecting 'Windows Live Mail' under 'Set', I clicked 'Apply'. The path to WLMail was found automatically, which I confirmed by checking the registry value 'EMailData' at the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox\4.1.3.6\Data. The path there was now C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\smapi.dll While I was at it, I added 'Hotmail' to the list as well. I believe the path for the mail clients are taken from the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail I am sure something similar could be applied to the Epson scanner software. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Ian Cockram" <iancockram@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:6D5F9C3E-066C-4341-98CB-BF618B9F5B21@xxxxxx Quote: > I have a new Epson scanner (vista compatible) with a scan to email button. > When pressed it asks me to select an email client via a drop down menu. | | Re: scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? Thanks Peter ............. tried your fix but no luck I'm afraid. I'm astonished that even via Google I can't find others similarly stuck! I can't be the only person with a recent Epson scanner (V350), Vista, and using WLM instead of WM. I'm 90% sure that other Epson scanner users (V100, V200, V500, V700 & V750) would all have the same problem in this scenario, and as Peter has pointed out, perhaps other manufacturers as well? Ho hum. "Peter.R" <Peter.R@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:97165EBE-3BC2-4507-B857-88423DC7F9CF@xxxxxx Quote: > I cant speak for Epson scanners, but I had the same problem with my > Canon scanner. | | Re: scan to email defaults to WM instead of WLM? I'm also having the same issue on a client's HP Photo Smart C4100. I will be trying Peter's fix and hoping it works. Ho hum. Have you tried the Vista newsgroup which specializes in that hardware? <eg> Cross-posting for convenience. BTW I think you should also look at the HKCU version of the same key... FWIW I had a related problem with IE's File, Send, Page by E-mail which WLMail was overriding and found it had made itself the Default Mail Client in that key and that was superseding the HKLM setting which made OE the Default. The same would occur if there is still an HKCU value overriding whatever you tried to do in HKLM. I would try using ProcMon (or RegMon) to find out which keys and values the scanner software is trying to access.
