Vista - Windows Live Mail - Web Based or Local?

Is Windows Mail a web based email client or a local client (on my machine)?
I installed it (twice) and it does nothing when I click on the link from the
Start menu. It will get the hourglass for awhile, then nothing. A few times
it will say ...Wait while windows live mail is configured...(or something
like that), then nothing. I have a Hotmail and a Live account. But they are
web based. Is that Windows Live Mail? Thanks.

I think I'm understanding now. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Windows Live
Mail is nothing unless you install the Toolbar. At first I only installed
Mail and Sign-In Assistant. I installed the Toolbar and basically it is web
based email with a local toolbar on IE7. The Toolbar is the controller. If
I'm wrong let me know. Thanks.

That's not correct. Windows Live Mail is a standard desktop
mail client, which also happens to handle Hotmail accounts.

Mail client for what? From what I see it's just another part of the browser.
And when email is accessed (to read, send, search emails, etc.) it goes to
the Internet. Am I missing something? I don't see the advantage to not just
going to the hotmail website and doing the same thing. Or keep using Windows
Mail or Outlook.

You seem to be referring to Windows Live Hotmail, which is a web-based email
service, and accessed with a web browser. It's the new version of Hotmail.

Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail are desktop programs which access POP and
IMAP email accounts. WLM can also download Hotmail email messages.

I have installed it on Vista32 and Vista64. Both Ultimate edition.

And from my first post in this thread

When I click on Home from the Toolbar (top left of browser) I go here-----

Do I have to have a paid subscription or something? From the Toolbar, what
do I click?

WLM doesn't have a Home button, so you're still in your browser, not in WLM.
WLM is not a browser, it doesn't need your browser. It sounds like WLM may
not be fully installed.
You don't need to pay for anything.

You should bug this. That's an unacceptable workaround which was forced
on you by a common problem of the WL Installer not giving sufficient diagnostics
about what it did or what it needs you to do so it can do what you expect it to.

I had a problem with my original install of WLMail because it gave a message
about OE being open--UNDER the window. ; }

Most recently I had three attempts at uninstall/reinstall WL Desktop Search
which failed for I don't know what reason. From the state I was in when it finally
worked I could guess that you have to be logged in to Windows LIve from
WLMail before the correct install can be found which will work? Etc.

I wonder what percentage of WL installs appear to users like this?
It looks as if if anything unexpected happens that it won't try to recover or tell us?
Not helpful and barely usable!
