    Contact Folders vs Groups

This might be the time when everyone who is frustrated with the 'missing'
contacts folder feature from OE express themselves!!! Folders for
organizing contacts was a great feature and should be incorporated into WLM.
Everyone has different groups of contacts....like, family, business, boy
scouts, etc. and folders are very useful when dealing with related specific
    interest groups.

Please respond to this post with your comments regarding the need to have
    this feature brought into WLM!!!

    Thanks,

    bj

    Hi bj:
You can reestablish your group folders on the Contacts page. I believe the only problem is they are lost in the import phase of the migration from other applications.

    RE: Contact Folders vs Groups

I have xp pro and outlook express 6 with windows address book for the
contacts. Does WLM use the same dbx files and windows address book that OE
has? The dbx files are your emails and folders. I may have to upgrade
because OE can not handle my ISP's email settings to “This server requires
a secure connection SSL checked and the ports to SMPT 465 and the POP3 port
    to 995.”

    Thanks

WLM does not allow for folder structures in the same fashion as OE....You
can not maintain your folders in specific interest groupings...which I feel
    is a real step back!!!!

Not being familiar with OE, I would ask you to explain what the "folder
structure" achieves that Contact Groups in WLMail cannot do.
Have you thought of using different Live IDs to separate your contacts into
"specific interest groupings" if Contact Groups are not good enough?

    Re: Contact Folders vs Groups

Folders allow you to separate, for example, family contacts and business
contacts and other contacts into separate folders. Then from within a
folder you can select individuals or groups that you want to send your email
to. When you have a lot of contacts and are only wanting to send to some
selected family members, folders allows you to select family members without
also seeing all your business contacts for example.

Lots of folks are suggesting "workarounds".....I'd just like to see an 'old'
    feature re-instated.

    Thanks,

    bj

    Re: Contact Folders vs Groups

The way you describe it, I honestly can't see how this differs from groups.
If I select a group in the Contacts window, only contacts in that group are
displayed. I can then select some or all of them, right-click and choose
Send Email. In a Compose window, I can type the name of a group in the To:
field. If I don't want the message to go to all members of the group, a
click on the plus sign will reveal all the individual contacts so I can
delete some of them. Many of my contacts belong to more than one group; if
these were separate folders, as you advocate, would changes in one folder be
automatically made to the same contact in another folder?

Hi Noel...thanks for your response. What you say is helpful but I still
feel the 'old way' was much easier....I guess I prefer working in the To:
field and with single stroke mouse actions and I don't like the deleting
idea but it does work also.

Your comment on having contacts in more than one group is a good
thought....I don't remember how that worked in the other process but agree
it would be a nuisance for multiple entries in different groups.

Thanks for your thoughts and input,

    bj

    Re: Contact Folders vs Groups

Thanks, bj. I remember back in the nineties when migrants from WordPerfect
cluttered up the newsgroups asking "How do I 'reveal codes' in Word?" There
are usually several ways of doing something, and just occasionally you might
have to learn a new one. Often, you will find the new way's better when you
    get used to it.

I've not heard of anyone else using different Live IDs to manage different
sets of contacts. I do it all the time; Change sign-in ID switches from one
to another almost instantaneously and presents me with a different set of
contacts. There is still the problem, though, of synchronizing contacts
common to two or more sets - it has to be done manually.
