Where else are Contacts saved???

I get Contact information that is old and should be deleted. BUT -- it does
NOT show up when I open Contacts in WLM, it DOES show when I write a message
and go to TO:

It is very frustrating since I have inadvertently sent it to an old address.

What is the problem and how do I fix it?

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

If you're signed in with a Live ID, then the contacts you see both in the
Contacts view and when you select To: in a compose window should be
identical, and those associated with that particular Live ID. If there is
more than one email address associated with a contact, you should have a
choice between them when composing a message. Only one of them is "primary",
and that you can specify on the Contact page. In Contact view, try selecting
View > List view and Preview pane. The preview will show all data recorded
for a contact.

That said, you haven't told us which OS you are using, so it's difficult to
advise further. Where did these contacts come from?

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

I do not understand what you mean with "sign in". I do not sign in when I
start up my computer and then go to Windows Live Mail.

I went to View etc. as you suggested, but do not see in the Contacts the
duplicates.

In TO: I do see them.

It is most time where a correspondent did change their service provider,
like they went from Verizon to Comcast, or similar.

So, these addresses must be hiding somewhere else.

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

MY OS is Windows XP.

THAT is what I would like to find out, where are the "additional contacts"
come from, where are they hiding.

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

What you're describing sounds very odd. Try this experiment: in Mail view,
click New (or File > New > Mail message, if you don't have a New button on
your toolbar). Before you do anything else, start slowly typing the name of
the contact whose address is sometimes wrong. A list of possible matches
should appear, getting shorter the more letters you type. Do you get more
than one choice for that contact?

With regard to signing in, what do you see at the right-hand end of your
toolbar, to the right of the Help question mark? And, in the Contacts
window, what does it say in the Title bar at the top of that window?

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

YES, THAT is when I see more than 1 choice, when I slowly type the address,
YET I see not that address in the CONTACTS list.

YES, I see next to the question mark a sign-in (had never noticed it before)
but I never sign in. I just get to my mail and NG's w/o ever signing in.

Re: Where else are Contacts saved???

OK. So far I'm still convinced that these spurious entries are to be found
somewhere in your contacts list. Try this:
Open a Contacts window and maximize it. Make sure you have View > List view
and View > Preview pane selected.
First, right-click on the left-hand Contacts column header and select First
name. On the second column, select Last name. On the third, Personal e-mail.
Then click on First name to sort alphabetically, and again to sort
anti-alphabetically. Entries with no First name will appear at the top of
the list. Any joy?

If not, click in the Find a contact box and start typing the name of one of
your troublesome contacts. You will not get exactly the same results as
before, but do you see more than one Search result for the contact? If so,
you have duplicate entries for the same contact. If not, click on the
contact in the list. Do you see the 'wrong' e-mail address in the preview
pane? If so, double click on the contact and edit the fields with 'old'
data.

If you cannot locate the faulty data by doing this, I don't know what's
happening. Next to All contacts at the top of the left hand column, it
should give you the total number of contacts. Note it down. Now open an
Explorer window. Make sure that View > Status bar is selected and also Tools
Quote:

> Folder options > View > Show hidden files and folders. Navigate to your
Store folder; unless you've moved it, it's at C:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail. In there should be a folder called Contacts, and in there one called
Default. Click on the Default folder; the left-hand end of the Status bar at
the bottom should tell you how many objects it contains. This should be the
number of contacts you noted earlier +1 for each Contacts group +1 for the
index file. Does this tally?

It's my bedtime. Post back with the results of all this and we'll take it
from there tomorrow.
