| Guest | NNTP error but no NNTP accounts XP Home SP2 WLM 12.0.1606 I'm on ADSL Broadband connecting my laptop to internet via router At least daily WLM says "You are working offline, do you want to connect?" although I haven't gone offline. Then when I say "retry" I also get the error: Unable to send or receive messages for the Hotmail account. Server Response: An error has occurred. Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8004108D Protocol: NNTP Port: 0 Secure(SSL): No I don't use newsgroups and have no NNTP accounts ... any ideas? paul |

The message refers to "the Hotmail account". My guess is that this is happening coincident with your "Check for new messages every ___ minutes" event. To test that idea you could disable that option and then only check manually according to your own self-imposed schedule. However you are probably still going to see that prompt, if not that error message... Check the Connection tab to see if you are Connecting to Windows.Live services. FWIW I think that I get that prompt regardless of what I do but that's what's doing it. What's really stupid IMO is that it even comes up when I have set Work Offline. I haven't checked if there is at least an interval which could be specified in the registry. I would try using ProcMon to check for that possibility. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle ---

| Guest | Re: NNTP error but no NNTP accounts There's something radically wrong with that account. Have you tried removing it, restarting WLMail and then adding it back, accepting all the defaults in the wizard? If you have no NNTP accounts, Options > General tab > Use newsgroup Communities support features should not be selected. And check that your AV is not scanning incoming and outgoing mail. -- Noel "PaulOnTopOfTheHill" <PaulOnTopOfTheHill@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:AFB8F430-E112-4016-90A1-15729233B7CF@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: NNTP error but no NNTP accounts Thanks for that. Yep, I tried removing/recreating and checking AV etc before I posted. It doesn't occur every time it connects (whether auto or forced by me) just sometimes. But what I hadn't done is uncheck "Use newsgroup Communities support feature", so I have now done so and will report back. But can anyone tell me what that option is actually suppsoed to do? thanks for "Ildhund" wrote:

| Guest | Re: NNTP error but no NNTP accounts The newsgroup Communities support features option gives the ability to provide feedback to the newsgroups as a Rating (Useful/Not useful), and the ability to tag posts as a comment, question, or suggestion when one is signed into Windows Live through WLMail. When one is not signed in, this feature still provides descriptive icons in columns called "Rank", "Msg Type", and "Rating". "Rank" can indicate whether a poster is an MVP, "Msg Type" indicates whether a post is a comment, question, or suggestion, as well as whether a question was 'answered', and "Rating" can indicate whether a thread is 'good'. I use the the newsgroup Communities support features without any problems whatsoever, and I know of no bug that has been narrowed down to this option. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "PaulOnTopOfTheHill" <PaulOnTopOfTheHill@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:F73CE2EC-8FAD-4629-9C3D-31C14AE53415@xxxxxx

This really is a crappy piece of software -- I've used it all through the beta cycle and using this released version I've had more problems than I ever did with the beta. It's less feature rich than OE (I can't search messages properly without installing another terrible piece of software - live search -- for instance) and impossibly unreliable. I think I'll uninstall it and go back to OE6 or better still dump hotmail and go over to Linux full-time. Offline Hotmail is the only reason I've kept Microsoft this long anyway. Rant over. Thanks for your suggestions anyhow, gentlemen paul

Hello - I had exact same issue. False working offline message then unable to connect and getting the "Windows live mail error 0x8004108D" - "Windows Live Mail error-Unable to send or receive messages for the MSN (...) account." Here's the link that fixed it - but I cleaned up - respectfully - the english and have posted the fix below the link. All backed up email immediately downloaded. by Runesai: http://help.lockergnome.com/vista/Wi...opict7255.html "I was running into the same problem. What I did to fix it was by going into the properties of my hotmail account (Alt to see menus – then Tools Menu – Accounts (right click your hotmail or MSN account and select properties), then go to the Connection Tab. From here I clicked the “always connect using” button. Then select the LAN option (only option I have). It asked me for a password (it may not) after that, then downloaded 4 days worth of email. I hope this helps someone else. "

| Guest | Re: NNTP error but no NNTP accounts OK after I calmed down I tried this suggestion and it has resolved the problem. I think I should have realised this myself much earlier but never mind! Thanks very much for your help "gmdavis" wrote:
