WLM message reading order options

I've probably missed something, but I have not found a way to read my e-mail
messages in the order I would like.

I sort my e-mail message folders by newest on top, oldest on bottom. When I
have unread messages, I want to start with the oldest unread message, open
it, read it, delete it (or not), then have the next unread message pop up.
This is the way I read e-mail with Outlook (at work).

In WLM when I delete an e-mail, it always brings me to the next older
message - i.e. it always opens up messages "going down", instead of "going
up" (to the next unread message). I've looked in all the various menus and
preference options, and cannot find a way to read in the order I want.
Currently I delete the message I'm reading, which brings me to the next
(older) message (which I've already read), then I press the "Previous"
toolbar button to go to the next unread message.

This seems like an obvious option to have, specially for people converting
from (or still currently using at work) Outlook. Have I missed something?

Thanks!

Cliff

Re: WLM message reading order options

Yes, the easiest way is to right click on the date column header and choose ascending.

This is an (obvious) way to re-sort the view of the whole folder in
ascending (oldest on top) order, but I want descending (newest on top) order,
but reading each message in "going up" order (instead of down).

Actually I guess I could do the following:

Re-sort to ascending
Read
Re-sort back to descending

Seems a little clunky (but is easier than what I'm currently doing), and I'm
surprised nobody else requested (of the WLM GUI developers) what I like
(specially since it's the default in Outlook).

Re: WLM message reading order options

Good point, Cliff.

I've also been looking for that feature in WLM since I installed it. I'm
glad to see I'm not the only one. As this is a standard feature of OE I also
thought it would be part of WLM.

It may be a standard feature of Outlook but it's not available in OE.

The closest you have to what the OP has described, in both OE
and WLMail, is to open the message in its own window and then
use a Previous button there. Unfortunately neither OE nor WLMail
have a Previous button for the Preview (aka Reading) pane.
OE has a very handy method of stepping forward through messages
by pressing the Spacebar, which WLMail has partially implemented
(another of its irritating half features.) However, even though neither
has a Previous or Next button both have Previous and Next commands
implemented by Ctrl-< and Ctrl-> respectively; so that is another
existing option you could use to support your unconventional reading
method. If you have a macro recorder you could perhaps simplify
the entering of that Ctrl-< keystroke for ease of use.

Re: WLM message reading order options

Robert,

I think you did not correctly interpreted our need. I know I can use the
previous and next message buttons (available when messages are displayed in a
separate window); this is not an issue. The problem is when you delete the
message you're reading; by default, WLM displays the next message below it,
without considering how they're sorted. If messages are sorted with newest
on top, the next message displayed after deletion is the previous one rather
than the next one. That's the feature we'd like to configure.

Regards,

JD
